CARY, N.C. (Feb. 13, 2025) – Despite an RBI from senior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC) and a game-high-tying two hits from sophomore Peyton Jemison (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury), the Mercy University baseball team opened its 2025 season with a 6-1 loss to regionally-ranked Goldey-Beacom College on Thursday night.
The Mavericks (0-1) open their season with a loss, while the Lightning (1-0) open their season with a win.
Mercy was led by Jemison who went 2-for-4 and by Sanders who recorded his first RBI of the season. Junior John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) went 1-for-3 with a run and junior Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) went 1-for-2. Junior David Bernard Jr. (Schenectady, N.Y./Herkimer CC) went 1-for-4 in his Mercy debut and junior Kolongi Goins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./FDR) went 1-for-3. Sophomore Nevin Scaperotti (Stormville, N.Y./Carmel) made the start on the mound and tossed 4.1 innings with no earned runs and one hit allowed with five strikeouts to take a no-decision. Senior Matthew Manzoeillo (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) pitched 1.2 innings with two runs allowed to take the loss. Freshman Gordon Votruba (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) pitched 2.0 innings in his collegiate debut with one run allowed and senior Will Sullo (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Rockland CC) tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
Goldey-Beacom was led by Adam McEvoy who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. George Starr pitched five innings with one run allowed and eight strikeouts to earn the win.
Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Nisco led off the inning with a triple and later scored on a Sanders sacrifice fly, giving the Mavericks an early lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the fifth inning when the Lightning scored following a Mercy error to tie the game at 1-1.
Goldey-Beacom took a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning on a McEvoy two-run double.
The Lightning tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning and one run in the ninth inning to take a 6-1 lead.
Mercy went down in order in the bottom of the ninth, giving Goldey-Beacom the 6-1 win.
Mercy had six hits and three errors and Goldey-Beacom had five hits and no errors.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they face Goldey-Beacom at 7 p.m. in Cary, North Carolina.
