Bergersen Records Team-High Three Points as No. 15 Men's Lacrosse Hosts No. 1 Adelphi

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 1, 2025) – Despite a team-high three points from sophomore Christopher Bergersen (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale), the No. 15 Mercy University men's lacrosse team dropped a 15-7 decision to defending National Champion No. 1 Adelphi University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (2-2) have dropped two games in a row and fall to the Panthers (3-0) for the third straight time.

Mercy was led by Bergersen who had a team-high three points on two goals and an assist. Junior AJ Barone (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) added two goals and graduate student Aidan Babnik (Carmel, N.Y./LIU), senior Ryan Smith (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) and freshman Cole Hunsberger (Waterloo, Ontario/Grand River Collegiate Institute) also scored. Senior Owen Stephenson (Glen Rock, N.J./UDC) had an assist with a game-high four caused turnovers and a team-high five ground balls. Sophomore Justin Ortiz (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) dished out an assist and junior Kenneth Summit (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Limestone University) went 10-of-20 on faceoffs with four ground balls. Sophomore Cameron Dorfman (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) made a game-high 15 saves to take the loss.

Adelphi was led by Braden Donnellan who had a game-high eight points on four goals and four assists. Dylan Renner made nine saves to earn the win.

The Panthers scored the first four goals of the game to take a 4-0 lead with 9:35 left in the first quarter. Back-to-back goals from Bergersen and Hunsberger made it 4-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Adelphi scored the first two goals of the second quarter to make it 6-2 with 10:30 remaining in the half. A Bergersen goal made it 6-3 before two Panthers goals made it 8-3 at the 8:12 mark. Barone followed with a man-down goal to make it 8-4 before Adelphi responded with three straight goals to take an 11-4 lead with 5:21 remaining in the quarter. Smith and Babnik closed the half with goals to send Mercy into halftime down, 11-6.

The score remained 11-6 until the 5:11 mark of the third quarter when Donnellan scored the first of three straight Adelphi goals, giving the Panthers a 14-6 lead with 3:23 on the clock. Barone scored a late goal from Bergersen to make it 14-7 heading to the fourth quarter.

Adelphi scored the lone goal of the fourth quarter at the 10:48 mark to make it 15-7 and held on for the 15-7 win.

Adelphi held a 41-30 edge in shots, a 33-26 edge in ground balls and Mercy went 11-of-25 on faceoffs.

Head Coach Ryan MacSpadyen and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 8th when they face Florida Tech in Sparks, Maryland at 6 p.m.
