DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 11, 2025) – Powered by a win from junior Ryan Ehret (Broad Channel, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy), a save from senior Will Sullo (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Rockland CC) and two hits from juniors Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central), Sean McAdams (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) and Kolongi Goins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./FDR), the Mercy University baseball team earned a 5-4 win over Holy Family University on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (9-8) snap a two-game losing streak, while the Tigers (2-6) have dropped three of their last four games.
Mercy was led by McAdams who went 2-for-3 with an RBI and by Ashline who went 2-for-4 with two runs. Goins went 2-for-3 and sophomore Peyton Jemison (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) went 1-for-4 with a run. Senior Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) went 1-for-3 and senior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC) and junior David Bernard Jr. (Schenectady, N.Y./Herkimer CC) recorded an RBI. Freshman Owen Brink (Hyde Park, N.Y./FDR) made the start on the mound and went 4.1 innings with three runs allowed to take a no-decision. Graduate student John Gillespie (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief and Ehret pitched 2.0 innings with one run allowed to earn his first win of the season. Sullo recorded the final two outs to record his first save of the season.
Holy Family was led by Kaden Mannis who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Hunter Kraiza allowed two unearned runs in 1.1 innings to take the loss.
Mercy took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Jemison singled and stole second before later scoring on a Bernard Jr. sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. McAdams later singled home Ashline to give Mercy a 2-0 lead.
The score remained 2-0 until the fourth inning when Holy Family scored three runs to take a 3-2 lead.
The score stayed 3-2 until the sixth inning when Mercy scored a run to tie the game at 3-3. Ashline led off the inning with a double and later scored on a squeeze bunt by Sanders to tie the game at 3-3.
Mercy scored two runs in the eighth inning to take a 5-3 lead. McAdams walked and stole and second with two outs in the inning. Senior Connor Ruland (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and Goins walked to load the bases before Jemison reached on an error by the shortstop, allowing McAdams to score to give the Mavericks a 4-3 lead. Ruland later scored on a wild pitch to put Mercy up, 5-3.
Holy Family scored a run in the ninth inning to make it 5-4 and had the tying run on second, but Sullo caught Marc Garcia striking out looking to give Mercy the 5-4 win.
Mercy had eight hits and one error and Holy Family had nine hits and one error.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play at Southern Connecticut State at 3 p.m.
