Jantz Records Team-High Two RBI as Softball Faces West Chester and Thomas More

MELBOURNE, Fla. (Mar. 11, 2025) – Despite a team-high two RBI on the day from freshman Keira Jantz (Islip, N.Y./Islip), the Mercy University softball team dropped a 4-2 decision to West Chester University before falling 6-4 to Thomas More University in their Florida trip finale on Tuesday afternoon.

The Mavericks (5-5) see their three-game winning streak come to an end, while the Golden Rams (10-3) have won five games in a row and the Saints (8-6) have won three games in a row.

Game 1: West Chester 4, Mercy 2

Mercy took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Sophomore Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) singled to lead off the inning and later scored after Jantz reached on an error by the shortstop to give Mercy a 1-0 lead. Senior Madilyn Lula (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) then singled home senior Victoria Seppala (Abington, Mass./Abington) to make it 2-0.

The Mavericks held a 2-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth when West Chester scored four runs on four hits and one error to take a 4-2 lead.

Junior Elizabeth Stark (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and sophomore Dylan Reyer (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) singled to put the tying runs on base. However, a flyout to center ended the game, giving West Chester the 4-2 win.

Mercy was led by Lula who went 1-for-3 with an RBI and by Reyer who went 2-for-4. Miller went 1-for-4 with a run and sophomore Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) went 1-for-4. Senior Skylar Brandemarte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Stonehill College) allowed two earned runs in 6.0 innings to take the loss.

West Chester was led by Paige Marabell who went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Makenzie Edwards pitched the final 3.0 innings to earn the win.

Mercy had five hits and two errors and West Chester had five hits and three errors.

Game 2: Thomas More 6, Mercy 4

Thomas More scored a run in the first inning, four runs in the second inning and a run in the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead.

Mercy scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-2. Miller walked and Seppala doubled to start the inning before freshman Jessica Fox (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) singled home Miller to make it 6-1. Freshman Talia Salanto (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) later hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Seppala to make it 6-2.

The Mavericks made it 6-3 in the fifth inning when Murphy led off the inning with a single and scored on a Miller double.

Mercy scored a run in the bottom of the seventh on a Jantz bases loaded walk to make it 6-4. However, a lineout to shortstop with the bases ended the game and gave Thomas More a 6-4 win.

Mercy was led by Fox who went 2-for-4 with an RBI and by Jantz who went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Miller went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and Seppala went 1-for-4 with a run. Murphy went 1-for-4 with a run and freshman Mikaela Mammola (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) went 2-for-4. Junior Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) allowed one earned run in 7.0 innings to take the loss.

Thomas More was led by Emily Allphin who went 4-for-4 with four RBI. Kendra Steinberg allowed three earned runs in seven innings to earn the win.

Mercy had nine hits and four errors and Thomas More had 10 hits and one error.

Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday when they play a doubleheader at Adelphi starting at 12 p.m.
