Murphy and Jantz Record an RBI as Softball Plays at Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Mar. 16, 2025) – Despite an RBI from sophomore Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) and freshman Keira Jantz (Islip, N.Y./Islip), the Mercy University softball team dropped 3-2 and 4-0 decisions at 2024 NCAA Tournament participant Adelphi University on Sunday afternoon at Janet L. Ficke Field.

The Mavericks (5-7) have dropped four games in a row and have dropped 10 straight meetings to the Panthers (4-10).

Game 1: Adelphi 3, Mercy 2

Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Junior Elizabeth Stark (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) walked to lead off the inning and later scored on a Murphy RBI single to make it 1-0. Adelphi scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 1-1.

The Panthers scored two runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead.

Mercy scored a run in the top of the seventh to make it 3-2. Freshman Jessica Fox (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) singled to lead off the inning and sophomore Onnika DeBruhl (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) pinch ran for her. Jantz then doubled down the right field line, scoring DeBruhl to make it 3-2. A groundout and popup ended the game, giving Adelphi the 3-2 game one win.

Mercy was led by Murphy and Jantz who both went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) and Fox both went 1-for-3. Senior Skylar Brandemarte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Stonehill College) tossed a complete game with one earned run allowed and four strikeouts to take the loss.

Adelphi was led by Brianna Pearson who went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Jenna Plue pitched a complete game to earn the win.

Mercy had four hits and four errors and Adelphi had eight hits and one error.

Game 2: Adelphi 4, Mercy 0

Adelphi scored all of the game's four runs in the bottom of the first on five hits to take a 4-0 lead.

Mercy threatened with runners on second and third in the fifth inning after Jantz reached on an error, freshman Talia Salanto (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) singled and DeBruhl recorded a sacrifice bunt. However, a strikeout ended the threat.

Murphy doubled and freshman Mikaela Mammola (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) singled to lead off the inning. Mammola later stole second to put runners on second and third with no outs. A foul out, strikeout and lineout ended the inning without the Mavericks scoring.

The Mavericks were unable to score in the seventh inning giving Adelphi the 4-0 game two win and the sweep.

Mercy was led by Murphy, Mammola, Jantz and Salanto who all went 1-for-3. Junior Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) allowed four runs in 1.0 inning to take the loss. Freshman Lauren McSweeney (Islip, N.Y./Islip) pitched 5.0 shutout innings with two strikeouts.

Adelphi was led by Pearson who went 1-for-2 with two RBI. Lily Kenney pitched a complete game shutout to earn the win.

Mercy had four hits and no errors and Adelphi had eight hits and two errors.

Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, March 21st when they host Staten Island for a doubleheader at 2:30 p.m.
