DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 27, 2025) – Powered by a team-high seven hits on the day from sophomore Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) and complete game wins from junior Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and senior Skylar Brandemarte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Stonehill College), the Mercy University softball team earned 9-1 and 6-0 wins over University of New Haven on Thursday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Mavericks (11-9) have won three games in a row and win all three meetings against the Chargers (7-15) this season.
Game 1: Mercy 9, New Haven 1 (5 Innings)
The game remained scoreless until the third inning when Mercy scored a run to take a 1-0 lead. Graduate student Mia Harris (West Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) singled to lead off the inning and sophomore Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) reached on a fielder's choice. Freshman Jessica Fox (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) later singled home Miller to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.
Mercy exploded for six runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead. Sophomore Onnika DeBruhl (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) led off the inning with a walk and later scored on a Harris RBI single to make it 2-0. Miller then singled home Murphy and sophomore Dylan Reyer (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) to give Mercy a 4-0 lead. Senior Victoria Seppala (Abington, Mass./Abington) then doubled home Harris to make it 5-0. Fox later brought home Miller on a sacrifice fly to put the Mavericks up 6-0 and senior Madilyn Lula (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) singled home Seppala to give Mercy a 7-0 lead.
New Haven scored an unearned run in the fifth inning to make it 7-1. Mercy scored two runs in the fifth inning to earn the win via the run-rule. Junior Elizabeth Stark (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) led off the inning with a walk and scored on a Harris RBI single to make it 8-1. Miller then singled to left field, scoring Murphy to give Mercy the 9-1 walk-off win via the run-rule.
Mercy was led by Miller who went 2-for-4 with three RBI and by Harris who went 4-for-4 with two RBI. Murphy went 3-for-4 with two runs and Seppala went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Fox went 1-for-1 with two RBI and Lula went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Reyer went 2-for-3 and Secoda allowed no earned runs in 5.0 innings with five strikeouts to earn her third win of the season.
New Haven was led by Kylie Thorpe who went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Skylar Griffin pitched 3.1 innings with seven runs allowed to take the loss.
Mercy had 14 hits and two errors and New Haven had four hits and one error.
Game 2: Mercy 6, New Haven 0
Mercy scored two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Murphy singled and stole second before scoring on a Seppala sacrifice bunt to give Mercy a 1-0 lead. Reyer, who singled earlier in the inning, scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
The Mavericks scored two more runs in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. Freshman Keira Jantz (Islip, N.Y./Islip) walked to lead off the inning and scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0. Murphy later doubled home freshman Talia Salanto (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) to put the Mavericks up, 4-0.
Mercy tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead. Jantz singled, Lula doubled and Salanto singled to load the bases. Freshman Alexis Lemus (Chino, Calif./South Hills) then drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 5-0 and Murphy then singled home Lula to give Mercy a 6-0 lead.
That would be more than enough run support for Brandemarte who allowed four hits and no runs with 10 strikeouts to give Mercy the game two win and the sweep.
Mercy was led by Murphy who went 4-for-4 with two RBI and by Reyer who went 1-for-3 with a run. Salanto went 1-for-3 with a run and Fox went 1-for-3. Jantz and Lula both went 1-for-2 and Brandemarte recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts to earn her team-leading fifth win of the season.
New Haven was led by Aaliyah Amidon and Emma Youngblood who both went 1-for-1. Peyton Sullivan allowed four runs in 1.2 innings to take the loss.
Mercy had nine hits and no errors and New Haven had four hits and no errors.
Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday when they play at D'Youville for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
