DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 29, 2025) – Powered by a game-high six goals and seven points from graduate student Jimmy Osorio (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Newberry College), the No. 17 Mercy University men's lacrosse team earned a 16-9 win over ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (5-3, 2-0 ECC) have won two games in a row and have won 37 straight games against ECC competition. Mercy improves to 15-0 all-time against the Redhawks (5-5, 2-1 ECC).
Mercy was led by Osorio who had a game-high six goals and seven points. Freshman Cole Hunsberger (Waterloo, Ontario/Grand River Collegiate Institute) had three goals and two assists and junior Devon Duchnowski (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) had two goals. Junior AJ Barone (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had a goal and three assists and sophomore Christopher Bergersen (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had a goal and two assists. Senior Owen Stephenson (Glen Rock, N.J./UDC) had a goal, six ground balls and two caused turnovers and senior Ryan Smith (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) and freshman Benjamin Salamone (Minisink Valley, N.Y./Minisink Valley) also scored. Sophomores Justin Ortiz (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) and Jake Norton (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and junior Connor Abrahall (Holtsville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist Diocesan) also had an assist and graduate student Aidan Babnik (Carmel, N.Y./LIU) had two assists with six ground balls. Junior Kenneth Summit (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Limestone University) went 11-of-22 on faceoffs with five ground balls and freshman Nicholas Filocamo (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) had a team-high three caused turnovers. Sophomore Cameron Dorfman (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) made a game-high 11 saves to earn the win.
Roberts Wesleyan was led by Justin Skelly who had a team-high four goals. Garrett Kayser made 10 saves to take the loss.
Ryan Brown scored the game's first goal at the 12:04 mark to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Duchnowski and Bergersen answered with back-to-back goals to give Mercy a 2-1 lead with 9:08 on the clock. A Tyler Clark goal tied the game at 2-2 with 7:56 left in the quarter before two goals from Osorio and one from Stephenson gave Mercy a 5-2 lead with 4:03 remaining in the quarter. Hunsberger scored the final goal of the quarter to give the Mavericks a 6-2 lead after the first quarter.
Back-to-back goals from Smith and Hunsberger to open the second quarter gave Mercy an 8-2 lead at the 10:23 mark. A Clark goal later made it 8-3 before a later Barone goal gave the Mavericks a 9-3 lead at halftime.
Roberts Wesleyan scored the first three goals of the third quarter to make it 9-6 with 10:18 left in the quarter. Osorio ended the run with a goal to make it 10-6 before Skelly scored to make it 10-7 at the 7:33 mark. Osorio scored the final goal of the quarter, off a Barone assist, to give Mercy an 11-7 lead after three quarters.
A Skelly goal to open the fourth quarter made it 11-8 with 13:39 left. An Osorio goal made it 12-8 before Skelly scored again to cut the Mavericks' lead to three, 12-9, with 7:03 remaining. Four straight goals from Hunsberger, Osorio, Duchnowski and Salamone gave Mercy a 16-9 lead with 29 seconds left and the Mavericks cruised the rest of the way to the 16-9 win.
Mercy held a 45-35 edge in shots, a 26-20 edge in shots on goal, a 46-32 edge in ground balls and went 14-of-28 on faceoffs.
Head Coach Ryan MacSpadyen and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, April 5th when they play at UDC at 2 p.m.
