16 Mavericks Record a Point as No. 17 Men's Lacrosse Earns 23-3 Win at UDC

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Apr. 5, 2025) – Powered by 16 different Mavericks recording a point and 11 Mavericks recording a caused turnover, the No. 17 Mercy University men's lacrosse team earned a 23-3 win over ECC foe University of the District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks (6-3, 3-0 ECC) have won three games in a row and improve to 9-1 all-time against the Firebirds (0-7, 0-3 ECC). Mercy has won 38 consecutive games against ECC competition.

Mercy was led by graduate student Jimmy Osorio (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Newberry College) who had a game-high six points on five goals and one assist, recording his 100th career goal. Junior Connor Abrahall (Holtsville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist Diocesan) had two goals, an assist and a game-high-tying four caused turnovers. Sophomore Justin Ortiz (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) added a goal and three assists and sophomore Colin Orsino (Brookhaven, N.Y./Bellport) had two goals. Graduate student Aidan Babnik (Carmel, N.Y./LIU) had two goals and an assist and senior Ryan Smith (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) scored one goal. Freshmen Benjamin Salamone (Minisink Valley, N.Y./Minisink Valley) and Carter Heuer (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford), juniors Ryken Kutner (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) and AJ Barone (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and seniors Shane Roche (Milford, Pa./Onondaga CC) and Ian Votta (Levittown, N.Y./NJIT) also scored. Sophomore Dillon Osorio (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) recorded three goals and junior Jack Agres (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had a goal and two assists. Freshman Cole Hunsberger (Waterloo, Ontario/Grand River Collegiate Institute) had a game-high four assists and senior Owen Stephenson (Glen Rock, N.J./UDC) had an assist with seven ground balls and four caused turnovers. Junior Kenneth Summit (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Limestone University) went 6-of-6 on faceoffs with three ground balls, senior Ryan Resnick (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) went 9-of-12 on faceoffs with seven ground balls and freshman Michael Mitrano (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) went 10-of-12 on faceoffs with seven ground balls. Sophomore Cameron Dorfman (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) made four saves in the first 36:40 minutes of action to earn the win, recording his 200th career save in the process. Junior Peter Murphy (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Port Jefferson) made six saves without allowing a goal in 11:33 minutes of action and freshman Ryan Strzalkowski (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) made three saves in the final 11:47 minutes of action.

UDC was led by Julian Schemm who scored a team-high two goals. Israel Amajioyi made a game-high 23 saves to take the loss.

Barone gave Mercy a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the game. Votta later made it 2-0 at the 13:30 mark of the first quarter before Babnik, Osorio and Smith scored their first goals of the game to give the Mavericks a 5-0 lead with 9:35 left in the first quarter. Osorio scored another goal before Dillon Osorio and Babnik scored to make it 8-0 with 6:20 remaining in the quarter. Jimmy Osorio scored the final two goals of the quarter to give Mercy a 10-0 lead after one quarter of play.

Jimmy Osorio made it 11-0 with a goal less than a minute into the second quarter. Dillon Osorio, Orsino and Abrahall scored the next three goals to put the Mavericks up, 14-0, at the 4:58 mark. A Dylan Donaldson goal with 2:20 on the clock ended the shutout and made it 14-1. Dillon Osorio scored the final goal of the half, off an Agres assist, to give Mercy a 15-1 lead at halftime.

Roche, Abrahall and Ortiz scored goals in the third quarter, giving the Mavericks an 18-1 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

Salamone, Heuer, Kutner, Orsino and Agres scored the first five goals of the fourth quarter to put Mercy up, 23-1, with 5:39 left. UDC scored two late goals to make it 23-3, but Mercy cruised the rest of the way to earn the 23-3 win.

Mercy held a 55-28 edge in shots, a 46-16 edge in shots on goal, a 56-22 edge in ground balls and went 25-of-30 on faceoffs.

Head Coach Ryan MacSpadyen and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, April 12th when they host Frostburg State at 12 p.m.
