DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 12, 2025) – Powered by a career-high 18 saves from sophomore Cameron Dorfman (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and a game-high six points from graduate student Jimmy Osorio (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Newberry College), the No. 17 Mercy University men's lacrosse team earned a 9-7 win over ECC foe Frostburg State University in a Morgan's Message Game on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (7-3, 4-0 ECC) have won four games in a row and improve to 7-0 all-time against the Bobcats (6-7, 3-2 ECC). Mercy has now won 39 consecutive games against ECC competition.
Mercy was led by Dorfman who made a career-high and game-high 18 saves to earn the win. Osorio had a game-high five goals with one assist and junior Devon Duchnowski (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) and graduate student Aidan Babnik (Carmel, N.Y./LIU) both had a goal and an assist. Sophomore Christopher Bergersen (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and freshman Cole Hunsberger (Waterloo, Ontario/Grand River Collegiate Institute) both scored a goal and seniors Ryan Smith (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) and Shane Roche (Milford, Pa./Onondaga CC) and junior AJ Barone (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) recorded an assist. Senior Owen Stephenson (Glen Rock, N.J./UDC) had a game-high-tying three caused turnovers with five ground balls and junior Michael Corbo (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) also had five ground balls. Junior Kenneth Summit (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Limestone University) went 11-of-18 on faceoffs with four ground balls.
Frostburg State was led by Luke Roach who had a team-high four points on three goals and an assist. Logan Covey made 17 saves to take the loss.
After both goalies made a save in the first minute of play, Osorio gave Mercy a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the day at the 12:33 mark. Dorfman made three more saves to keep Mercy ahead before Bergersen scored, off a Barone assist, to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead with 1:45 left in the quarter. A Luke Aspnes goal cut Mercy's lead to 2-1 at the end of the first quarter.
Back-to-back goals from Hunsberger and Osorio to begin the second quarter gave Mercy a 4-1 lead at the 11:52 mark. The Bobcats answered with back-to-back goals to make it 4-3 with 5:45 left in the half. An Osorio goal from Roche made it 5-3 with 1:31 on the clock. A late Roach goal made it 5-4 in favor of Mercy at halftime.
A Henry Sykes man-up goal to open the third quarter tied the game at 5-5. Osorio found the back of the net again, off a Duchnowski assist, to give Mercy a 6-5 lead at the 12:38 mark. A Roach goal later tied the game again at 6-6. Duchnowski gave the Mavericks a 7-6 lead less than a minute after Frostburg State tied the game and Osorio closed the quarter with a man-up goal from Babnik to give Mercy an 8-6 lead after three quarters.
A Babnik goal at the 14:06 mark of the fourth quarter made it 9-6. Mercy's defense held the Bobcats without a goal until Mike Gloeckler scored with 32 seconds left to make it 9-7. Dorfman made five saves in the quarter to keep Frostburg State from scoring any more goals and the Mavericks held on for the 9-7 win.
Frostburg State held a 44-38 edge in shots and Mercy held a 27-25 edge in shots on goal. Frostburg State held a 36-34 edge in ground balls and Mercy went 11-of-19 on faceoffs.
