SPARKILL, N.Y. (Apr. 19, 2025) – Powered by 15 different Mavericks recording a point and 10 Mavericks producing a caused turnover, the No. 15 Mercy University men's lacrosse team earned a 19-9 win at ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field.
The Mavericks (8-3, 5-0 ECC) have won five games in a row and improve to 9-0 all-time against the Spartans (3-9, 0-5 ECC). Mercy has secured their 10th straight ECC Championship berth. Mercy has won 40 consecutive games against ECC competition.
Mercy was led by graduate student Jimmy Osorio (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Newberry College) who had a game-high-tying four goals. Senior Ryan Smith (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) had a game-high six points on two goals and a game-high four assists and graduate student Aidan Babnik (Carmel, N.Y./LIU) had three goals. Sophomore Justin Ortiz (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) had a career-high four points on two goals and two assists and sophomore Colin Orsino (Brookhaven, N.Y./Bellport) had two goals. Junior Connor Abrahall (Holtsville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist Diocesan) had two goals and senior Shane Roche (Milford, Pa./Onondaga CC) had a goal and two assists. Junior Devon Duchnowski (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), freshman Cole Hunsberger (Waterloo, Ontario/Grand River Collegiate Institute) and senior Ian Votta (Levittown, N.Y./NJIT) also scored and junior Jack Agres (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had two assists. Freshmen Jackson Redmond (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) and Benjamin Salamone (Minisink Valley, N.Y./Minisink Valley), sophomore Christopher Bergersen (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and senior Ryan Resnick (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) also added an assist. Senior Owen Stephenson (Glen Rock, N.J./UDC) had a team-high seven ground balls with a game-high five caused turnovers. Sophomore Cameron Dorfman (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) made five saves in the first 34:38 minutes of action to earn the win. Junior Peter Murphy (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Port Jefferson) made a team-high seven saves in 23:05 minutes of action.
STAC was led by Austin Maybee who had a team-high five points on four goals and an assist. Craig Peavy made nine saves in the first half to take the loss.
Osorio gave Mercy a 1-0 lead at the 13:39 mark of the first quarter. Goals from Roche, Smith and Babnik made it 4-0 with 6:22 left in the quarter. Babnik later made it 5-0 after a Smith assist before STAC scored the final two goals of the quarter to make it 5-2 in favor of Mercy at the end of the opening quarter.
Back-to-back goals from Osorio and Smith to begin the second quarter gave the Mavericks a 7-2 lead with 9:24 left in the half. A Maybee goal made it 7-3 before two goals from Osorio and goals from Babnik and Hunsberger gave Mercy a commanding 11-3 lead with 55 seconds on the clock. The Mavericks headed into halftime with a 11-3 lead.
Goals from Duchnowski and Orsino made it 13-3 at the 12:53 mark of the third quarter. Two straight goals from Ortiz made it 15-3 with 10:19 left in the quarter. A late Maybee goal cut Mercy's lead to 15-4 at the end of the third quarter.
STAC scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to make it 15-6 with 12:15 left. A Votta goal at the 11:11 mark made it 16-6 before a Maybee goal made it 16-7. Abrahall scored back-to-back goals to give Mercy an 18-7 lead with 6:30 left. The Spartans recorded two goals in a row to make it 18-9 before Orsino scored the final goal of the day with 3:25 left to make it 19-9. The Mavericks cruised the rest of the way to the 19-9 win.
Mercy held a 55-31 edge in shots and a 37-21 edge in shots on goal. STAC held a 47-42 edge in ground balls and Mercy went 12-of-30 on faceoffs.
Head Coach Ryan MacSpadyen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, April 25th when they host Molloy for Senior Day at 12 p.m.
