Goins Records Walk-Off RBI Single in 12th Inning and McGarry Earns Win as Baseball Earns 5-4 Win Over RV Molloy on Rick Wolff Day

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 30, 2025) – Powered by a walk-off RBI single in the 12th inning from junior Kolongi Goins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./FDR) and 5.1 shutout innings of relief from freshman Ethan McGarry (Cohoes, N.Y./Shaker), the Mercy University baseball team earned a 5-4 win over ECC foe RV Molloy University on Rick Wolff Day on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.

In a ceremony prior to the game, the Mavericks retired former head coach Rick Wolff's #24 jersey.

The Mavericks (17-14, 4-4 ECC) have won two games in a row and earn a season series split with the Lions (15-10, 5-3 ECC). Molloy fails to win the season series against Mercy for the first time since 2015.

Mercy was led by Goins who went 5-for-5 with two RBI. Junior John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) went 3-for-6 with an RBI and junior David Bernard Jr. (Schenectady, N.Y./Herkimer CC) went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Senior Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) went 2-for-6 and senior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC) went 3-for-5. Senior Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) went 1-for-5 and freshman Andre Jenkins (Chester, N.Y./Chester Academy) allowed four runs in 6.2 innings to earn a no-decision. McGarry pitched 5.1 shutout innings of relief with three strikeouts to earn his second win of the season.

Molloy was led by Aidan Larkin who went 2-for-6 with an RBI. Thomas Charlwood allowed one run in 2.2 innings to take the loss.

Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Nisco singled and Bernard Jr. doubled to put runners on second and third. Junior Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) then grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Nisco to give Mercy a 1-0 lead.

Molloy scored a run in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh innings to take a 4-1 lead.

The Lions headed to the bottom of the ninth with a 4-1 lead. Mercy scored three runs to tie the game at 4-4, sending the game into extra innings. Sanders and Hoti recorded back-to-back singles with one out before Goins singled to right field, scoring Sanders to make it 4-2. After a strikeout made two outs in the inning, Nisco recorded an infield single that scored Hoti to cut the Lions' lead to one, 4-3. Bernard Jr. then doubled down the right field line, scoring Goins to tie the game at 4-4. After a pitching change. A flyout ended the inning with the winning run at third base.

The game remained tied at 4-4 heading to the bottom of the 12th when Mercy scored a run to earn the 5-4 walk-off win. Senior Frankie Asaro (East Williston, N.Y./Wheatley) walked with one out and Sanders singled to put runners on first and second. Hoti was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Goins then singled to right center, scoring Asaro to give Mercy the 5-4 walk-off win.

Mercy had 16 hits and three errors and Molloy had 11 hits and no errors.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, April 1st when they play at New Haven at 3 p.m.
