DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 10, 2025) – Powered by a complete game shutout from senior Skylar Brandemarte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Stonehill College) and the go-ahead RBI from freshman Jessica Fox (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) in game two, the Mercy University softball team dropped a 4-2 decision to Dominican University in game one before earning a 2-0 win in game two on Thursday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Mavericks (13-15) earn their second straight doubleheader split and earn a split against the Chargers (11-22) for the second straight year.
Game 1: Dominican 4, Mercy 2
Dominican scored three runs in the second inning and one run in the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead.
Mercy entered the top of the seventh trailing 4-0. Senior Victoria Seppala (Abington, Mass./Abington) led off the inning with a walk and later advanced to third after a senior Madilyn Lula (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) double. Freshman Mikaela Mammola (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) then reached on a fielder's choice to make two outs in the inning. Sophomore Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) then doubled to right center, scoring Lula and Mammola to make it 4-2. Graduate student Mia Harris (West Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) then walked, but a strikeout ended the game, giving the Chargers a 4-2 game one win.
Mercy was led by Murphy who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Lula went 2-for-3 with a run and Seppala went 1-for-1. Harris went 1-for-3 and sophomore Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) went 1-for-4. Freshman Carly Gaffney (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton Area) pitched a complete game with four runs allowed to take the loss.
Dominican was led by Adriana Barnes who went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Emily Baxter pitched 4.1 scoreless innings to earn the win.
Mercy had seven hits and no errors and Dominican had seven hits and no errors.
Game 2: Mercy 2, Dominican 0
Brandemarte pitched four shutout innings to keep the game scoreless. Mercy scored two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. Miller led off the inning with a double and Seppala singled before stealing second to put runners on second and third. Fox then singled to center field, scoring Miller to make it 1-0 and Seppala scored on the throw to give Mercy a 2-0 lead.
That would be more than enough run support for Brandemarte who allowed just one base runner in the final three innings, giving the Mavericks the 2-0 game two win.
Mercy was led by Fox who went 1-for-4 with an RBI and by Miller who went 2-for-3 with a run. Freshman Keira Jantz (Islip, N.Y./Islip) went 2-for-3 and Mammola went 2-for-3. Lula went 1-for-2 and Harris went 1-for-4. Brandemarte tossed a complete game shutout with just four hits allowed and four strikeouts to earn her seventh win of the season.
Dominican was led by Barnes who went 1-for-3. Melanie Fiumara allowed two runs in 5.0 innings to take the loss.
Mercy had nine hits and no errors and Dominican had four hits and two errors.
Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday when they play at Staten Island at 12 p.m.
