NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (Apr. 12, 2025) – Despite an RBI from seniors Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) and Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC), the Mercy University baseball team dropped 5-2 and 5-0 decisions to ECC foe D'Youville University on Saturday afternoon at Sal Magile Field.
The Mavericks (21-18, 7-8 ECC) see their two-game winning streak come to an end, while the Saints (10-23, 4-3 ECC) move over .500 in ECC play.
Game 1: D'Youville 5, Mercy 2
Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Junior John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) singled with one out and later scored on a Gonzalez RBI single to right field.
D'Youville scored three runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.
The Mavericks scored a run in the sixth inning to make it 3-2. Gonzalez singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a passed ball. Sanders later doubled Gonzalez home for Mercy's second run of the game.
The Saints added two runs in the eighth inning to take a 5-2 lead. Mercy went down in order in the ninth inning, giving D'Youville the 5-2 game one win.
Mercy was led by Gonzalez who went 4-for-4 with an RBI. Sanders went 2-for-3 with an RBI and sophomore Peyton Jemison (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) went 1-for-5. Nisco went 2-for-5 with a run and junior Sean McAdams (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) went 1-for-4. Senior Connor Ruland (Islip, N.Y./Islip) went 1-for-4 and junior Kolongi Goins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./FDR) went 1-for-3. Senior Matthew Manzoeillo (Islip, N.Y./Islip) pitched 7.0 innings with three runs allowed to take the loss.
D'Youville was led by Billy Morris who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Ryan McCarthy allowed one earned run in 6.0 innings to earn the win and Blaise Kolbert pitched 3.0 scoreless innings of relief to earn the save.
Mercy had 12 hits and two errors and D'Youville had nine hits and one error.
Game 2: D'Youville 5, Mercy 0
The Saints took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a Colby Wilson RBI single and a Jonathan Simpson fielder's choice.
D'Youville scored three more runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead. Dillon Crook scored the first run of the inning on a wild pitch and Alec Boucher drove in the second run on a groundout to second. Lucas Penner scored the final run of the inning after Morris reached on an error by the shortstop.
McAdams tripled to lead off the fifth inning, but was left stranded. Mercy was unable to score in the sixth and seventh innings, giving D'Youville the 5-0 game two win.
Mercy was led by Jemison, junior Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central), McAdams and Sanders who all went 1-for-3. Senior Gaetano Pennisi (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) allowed no earned runs in 3.1 innings to take the loss. Freshman Sammy Mendez (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.
D'Youville was led by Wilson who went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Ty Graczyk tossed a complete game shutout to earn the win.
Mercy had four hits and four errors and D'Youville had two hits and no errors.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play at D'Youville at 12 p.m.
