Kelly Scores Career-High Five Goals as No. 25 Women's Lacrosse Plays at No. 9 Pace

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (Apr. 16, 2025) – Despite a game-high-tying five goals from freshman Ashlinn Kelly (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale), the No. 25 Mercy University women's lacrosse team dropped a 16-12 decision at No. 9 Pace University on Wednesday night at Northwell Stadium.

The Mavericks (7-6) see their two-game winning streak come to an end and fall to the Setters (12-3) for the second straight year.

Mercy was led by Kelly who scored a career-high five goals. Senior Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) had two goals and an assist. Hansen recorded her 200th career point and now has 201 for her career. She becomes the fifth Maverick in program history to record 200 career points. Freshman Kayden Meyer (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) had two goals and an assist and sophomore Riley Wallace (Islip, N.Y./Islip) had a goal, two caused turnovers and a game-high three assists. Senior Lindsey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had a goal, a game-high-tying four ground balls, a game-high seven draw controls and two caused turnovers. Shimborske recorded her 200th career ground ball and now has 203 for her career. She becomes the second Maverick in program history to record 200 career ground balls. Shimborske also set a new school record with her 167th career caused turnover and now has 168 for her career. She surpasses the previous record of 166 set by Micayla Brady in 2023. Freshman Marena Morales (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) scored a goal and junior Olivia LaMonica (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Township) made a game-high 10 saves to take the loss.

Pace was led by Gigi Genovese who had a game-high-tying five goals. Samantha Tanguay made four saves to earn the win.

Genovese gave the Setters a 1-0 lead at the 9:46 mark of the first quarter. A goal from Meyer and back-to-back Hansen goals gave Mercy a 3-1 lead with 4:17 left in the first quarter. A Maddie Schubert goal cut the Mavericks' lead to one, 3-2, at the end of the first quarter.

A Mackenzie Carita goal tied the game at 3-3 less than a minute into the second quarter. A Wallace goal from Hansen gave Mercy a 4-3 lead at the 10:56 mark. Pace scored two straight goals to retake the lead at 5-4 with 4:49 remaining in the half. A Kelly goal from Wallace with seven seconds left tied the game at 5-5, heading into halftime.

Kelly and Carita traded goals to make it 6-6 with 12:50 left in the third quarter. Two straight goals from Kelly and Morales gave Mercy an 8-6 lead at the 11:48 mark. Goals from Annie Sheehan, Genovese and Schubert to end the quarter gave Pace a 9-8 lead after three quarters.

The Setters scored the first five goals of the fourth quarter to take a 14-8 lead with 7:31 left, leading to a Mercy timeout. Shimborske won the ensuing draw control and scored to make it 14-9, ending Pace's 8-0 run from the third quarter. Meyer later found the back of the cage with 5:46 on the clock to make it 14-10. The Setters scored the next two goals to increase the lead back to six, 16-10, with 3:31 remaining. Kelly scored two goals in the final 35 seconds of the game to make it 16-12, but time ran out on the Mavericks and Pace earned the 16-12 win.

Pace held a 35-27 edge in shots, a 14-13 edge in ground balls and Mercy held a 17-15 edge in draw controls.

Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday when they play at UDC at 1 p.m.
