ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Apr. 25, 2025) – Powered by a one-hitter from senior Skylar Brandemarte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Stonehill College) in game one and a two-run go-ahead home run from freshman Keira Jantz (Islip, N.Y./Islip) in game two, the Mercy University softball team earned 5-0 and 6-3 wins over ECC foe Molloy University on Friday afternoon at Bob Klein Field.
The Mavericks (22-18, 12-6 ECC) have won eight games in a row for the first time since 2018 and sweep the season series with the Lions (18-28, 10-8 ECC) for the first time in program history. Mercy has their most ECC wins in a season since 2021 and has secured the No. 2 seed in next week's ECC Championship.
Game 1: Mercy 5, Molloy 0
Mercy took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Sophomore Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) led off the game with a double and graduate student Mia Harris (West Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) singled to put runners on second and third. Senior Victoria Seppala (Abington, Mass./Abington) then reached on an error by the shortstop, allowing Murphy to score to make it 1-0. Harris later scored after an error by the shortstop, giving Mercy a 2-0 lead.
The Mavericks added a run in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) led off the inning with a double and later scored on a senior Madilyn Lula (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) triple to center field.
Mercy scored a run in the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead. Freshman Jessica Fox (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) and Miller singled before junior Elizabeth Stark (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Lula hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring freshman Mikaela Mammola (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) to make it 4-0.
Murphy hit a solo home run to left field to lead off the seventh inning, giving Mercy a 5-0 lead.
Brandemarte retired the Lions in order in the bottom of the seventh, giving Mercy the 5-0 game one win.
Mercy was led by Murphy who went 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Lula went 1-for-2 with two RBI and Fox went 2-for-3. Miller went 2-for-3 and Harris went 1-for-2. Jantz went 1-for-4 and Brandemarte allowed just one hit and struck out two to earn her 12th win of the season.
Molloy was led by Megan Wegel who went 1-for-2. Stevie Dabbadie allowed two earned runs in 2.0 innings to take the loss.
Mercy had nine hits and no errors and Molloy had one hit and two errors.
Game 2: Mercy 6, Molloy 3
Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Murphy doubled to lead off the game and scored on a Seppala groundout to give Mercy an early lead.
The Mavericks added two more runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Miller doubled with one out and Lula walked before sophomore Dylan Reyer (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) tripled down the left field line, scoring both Miller and Lula to make it 3-0.
Molloy scored three runs in the fourth inning to tie the game at 3-3.
Mercy recorded two runs in the sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead. Seppala singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a Jantz two-run home run to left center.
The Mavericks made it 6-3 in the seventh inning. Lula walked to lead off the inning and scored on a Murphy RBI single. Brandemarte tossed a scoreless seventh inning to give Mercy the 6-3 game two win and the sweep.
Mercy was led by Jantz who went 1-for-3 with her first career home run and two RBI. Murphy went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Seppala went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Miller went 1-for-3 and Reyer went 3-for-3 with two RBI. Freshman Lauren McSweeney (Islip, N.Y./Islip) allowed three runs in 6.0 innings to earn her sixth win of the season. Brandemarte recorded her second save of the season.
Molloy was led by Alexis Montgomery who went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Natalie Moussa allowed six runs in 7.0 innings to take the loss.
Mercy had eight hits and one error and Molloy had nine hits and one error.
Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday when they host Queens for Senior Day at 12 p.m.
