Jenkins Earns Win and Jemison, Sanders and Goins Record an RBI as Baseball Earns 3-1 Win at Queens

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 25, 2025) – Powered by a win from freshman Andre Jenkins (Chester, N.Y./Chester Academy) and RBI from senior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC), junior Kolongi Goins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./FDR) and sophomore Peyton Jemison (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury), the Mercy University baseball team earned a 3-1 win at ECC foe Queens College on Friday afternoon at Hennekens Stadium.

The Mavericks (26-19, 9-8 ECC) have won two games in a row and tie the single-season school record for wins previously set in 1990. The Knights (14-23, 5-8 ECC) have dropped two of their last three games.

Mercy was led by Jemison who went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Sanders went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Goins went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) went 2-for-4 with a run and senior Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) went 2-for-4 with a run. Junior Sean McAdams (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) went 1-for-2 and junior Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) went 1-for-4. Juniors David Bernard Jr. (Schenectady, N.Y./Herkimer CC) and John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) went 1-for-4 and Jenkins allowed no earned runs in 7.1 innings to earn his fifth win of the season. Freshman Ryan DiNapoli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) pitched the final 1.2 innings without allowing a run to earn his second save of the year.

Queens was led by Nick O'Conner who went 2-for-4. Nick Kozerski allowed three runs in 6.1 innings to take the loss.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Queens scored a run after an error by the right fielder, giving the Knights a 1-0 lead.

Mercy responded with three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 3-1 lead. Gonzalez singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second after a McAdams sacrifice bunt. Sanders then doubled to left center, scoring Gonzalez to tie the game at 1-1. Hoti then singled to put runners on first and third. Goins then singled home Sanders to give Mercy a 2-1 lead. Jemison singled home Hoti for the final run of the inning, giving the Mavericks a 3-1 lead.

The duo of Jenkins and DiNapoli combined to toss a scoreless seventh, eighth and ninth innings to give Mercy the 3-1 win.

Mercy had 14 hits and one error and Queens had seven hits and no errors.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host Queens for Senior Day starting at 2 p.m.
