WEST HAVEN, Conn. (Apr. 30, 2025) – Powered by sophomore Peyton Jemison (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) setting a new single-season school record for hits and doubles, the Mercy University baseball team ended its regular season with a 14-13 win at University of New Haven on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mavericks (28-22) sweep the season series with the Chargers (22-18) and end the regular season with a school record 28 wins.
Mercy was led by Jemison who went 5-for-5 with four runs and two RBI. Jemison now has 19 doubles on the year, surpassing the previous record of 16 set by Greg Bolger in 1984. Jemison also has 76 hits on the year, surpassing the previous record of 75 set by John Mooradian in 2019. Junior John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) went 3-for-4 with three RBI and senior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC) went 4-for-5 with his fourth home run of the season and two RBI. Senior Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) went 1-for-5 with three RBI and junior Sean McAdams (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) went 2-for-4 with three runs. Freshman Matthew Hesselbirg (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Newfield) went 3-for-6 with three RBI and senior Connor Ruland (Islip, N.Y./Islip) went 2-for-5 with two runs. Freshman Andre Jenkins (Chester, N.Y./Chester Academy) went 1-for-1 and freshman Ethan McGarry (Cohoes, N.Y./Shaker) made his first career start with 5.0 innings pitched and four earned runs allowed to take a no-decision. Junior Samuel Gil (Bronx, N.Y./St. Bonaventure University) allowed two earned runs in 1.0 inning to earn his first win of the season and freshman Gordon Votruba (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) recorded three outs in the ninth inning to earn his third save.
New Haven was led by EJ Ettinger who went 1-for-4 with four RBI. Timothy Lewis allowed two earned runs in 2.0 innings to take the loss.
Mercy scored two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Jemison walked to lead off the game and later scored on a Gonzalez RBI single to make it 1-0. Sanders later singled home Gonzalez to give Mercy a 2-0 lead. New Haven scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead.
The Mavericks recorded three runs in the second inning to take the lead back at 5-3. Ruland singled to lead off the inning and freshman Jack Antalek (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) was hit by a pitch. Jemison then doubled home Ruland to tie the game at 3-3. Nisco singled home Antalek to give Mercy a 4-3 lead and Jemison scored after Gonzalez reached on a fielder's choice to make it 5-3.
Mercy tacked on three runs in the third inning to take an 8-3 lead. McAdams walked to leadoff the inning before Sanders singled. Hesselbirg then doubled home both McAdams and Sanders to make it 7-3. Ruland singled and later scored on a Jemison double to make it 8-3. New Haven scored a run in the bottom of the third to make it 8-4.
Sanders homered in the fourth inning to give Mercy a 9-4 lead. New Haven scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 9-5.
Jemison doubled in the fifth inning and scored on a Gonzalez sacrifice fly to give Mercy a 10-5 lead.
Mercy made it 11-5 in the sixth inning. McAdams walked and Sanders doubled before Hesselbirg singled home McAdams.
New Haven scored three runs in the seventh inning to make it 11-8.
Mercy recorded a run in the eighth inning to make it 12-8. McAdams doubled with one out and scored on an error by the second baseman. New Haven scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it 12-10.
Nisco recorded a two-run double in the ninth inning to put Mercy up, 14-10. The Chargers scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to make it 14-13, but Votruba recorded a pair of fielder's choices to end the game, giving Mercy the 14-13 win.
Mercy had a season-high 21 hits with five errors and New Haven had 15 hits and five errors.
