Wallace Records Game-High Seven Goals and Nine Points as No. 23 Women's Lacrosse Plays at Molloy

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Apr. 5, 2025) – Despite a career-high and game-high nine points from sophomore Riley Wallace (Islip, N.Y./Islip), the No. 23 Mercy University women's lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought 19-18 overtime decision at ECC foe Molloy University on Saturday afternoon at the RVC Sports Complex.

The Mavericks (5-5, 1-1 ECC) see their two-game winning streak come to an end and lose to the Lions (4-8, 2-1 ECC) on the road for the second straight time.

Mercy was led by Wallace who had a career-high and game-high seven goals and nine points. Freshman Ashlinn Kelly (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) added four goals, two assists and one caused turnover and senior Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) had two goals and an assist. Freshman Kayden Meyer (Mastic, N.Y./William Floyd) had two goals and junior Maeghan Callow (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) had two goals and eight draw controls. Freshman Marena Morales (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) had a goal and senior Lindsey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had a game-high 10 draw controls and four caused turnovers with three ground balls. Junior Olivia LaMonica (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Township) made a game-high and career-high 14 saves to take the loss.

Molloy was led by Megan Rugolo who had a team-high seven points on five goals and two assists. Nicole Schaumloffel made 12 saves to earn the win.

An Emma Ryan goal at the 11:57 mark of the first quarter gave Molloy a 1-0 lead. Wallace, Hansen, and Kelly scored three straight goals to give Mercy a 3-1 lead with 6:36 left in the quarter before a Ryan goal made it 3-2. Wallace gave the Mavericks a 4-2 lead with 5:31 remaining in the quarter before a Rugolo goal cut Mercy's lead to one, 4-3, at the end of the first quarter.

An Alexa Amorison goal to open the second quarter tied the game at 4-4. Goals from Kelly, Hansen and Wallace gave Mercy a 7-4 lead with 8:39 left in the half. A goal from Ryan and two goals from Rugolo tied the game again at 7-7 with 4:26 remaining in the quarter. Sofia Quitoni gave the hosts an 8-7 lead at the 3:35 mark before a Meyer goal with less than a minute to go in the half tied the game at 8-8 heading into halftime.

Callow gave Mercy a 9-8 lead with 13:36 left in the third quarter. Molloy regained the lead at 10-9 after back-to-back goals at the 11:08 mark. Kelly evened the score at 10-10 after a Wallace assist before two-straight Lion goals gave Molloy a 12-10 lead with 7:42 remaining in the quarter. Goals from Morales and Callow tied the game at 12-12 before a Quitoni goal gave Molloy a 13-12 lead. Meyer tied the score at 13-13 after a Hansen assist, sending the teams into the fourth quarter tied at 13-13.

A Quitoni goal to begin the fourth quarter gave Molloy a 14-13 lead. A goal from Kelly and three consecutive goals from Wallace gave the Mavericks a 17-14 lead with 6:43 remaining. A Quitoni goal made it 17-15 before Wallace scored again at the 5:17 mark to put the Mavericks up, 18-15. Amorison scored with 4:38 left to make it 18-16 and 15 seconds later Rugolo scored to cut the Mercy lead to one, 18-17. A Quitoni goal with 16 seconds left tied the game at 18-18. The game remained tied at the end of regulation, sending the game into overtime.

LaMonica made a save in the first half of the overtime period to keep the game tied after the first three minutes of the overtime period. Molloy won the draw control at the start of next three minutes of the first overtime period and Rugolo scored a free position goal with just under two minutes remaining in the overtime period to give the Lions the 19-18 win.

Molloy held a 40-34 edge in shots, a 33-30 edge in shots on goal and a 23-19 edge in draw controls. Mercy held a 15-12 edge in ground balls.

Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, April 9th when they host St. Thomas Aquinas at 3 p.m.
