JACKSON, N.J. (Apr. 8, 2025) – Powered by seven different Mavericks recording an RBI, the Mercy University baseball team earned a 14-9 win over Georgian Court University on Tuesday night.
The Mavericks (20-16) have now recorded 20 wins in a season for the fifth time under Head Coach Chris Schoen. Mercy had three 20-win seasons from 1977-2017. The Lions (5-24) have dropped two games in a row.
Mercy was led by junior Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) who went 2-for-3 with a game-high four RBI. Junior Kolongi Goins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./FDR) went 3-for-5 with three RBI and sophomore Peyton Jemison (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Junior Anthony Dolce (North Salem, N.Y./Westchester CC) went 2-for-5 with an RBI and freshman Anthony Altobelli (Smithtown, N.Y./Kings Park) went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Joey Bodin (Matawan, N.J./Matawan Regional) went 1-for-5 with two runs and senior Gabe Sanders (Dunedin, Fla./Central Alabama CC) went 1-for-1. Freshman Owen Brink (Hyde Park, N.Y./FDR) allowed one run in 3.0 innings to earn a no-decision. Senior Will Sullo (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Rockland CC) pitched 1.0 innings of relief with one run allowed to earn the win. Freshman Gordon Votruba (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) pitched 2.0 scoreless innings of relief and freshman Ryan DiNapoli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings of relief. Freshman Chase de Castro (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
Georgian Court was led by Israel Garcia who went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Jaydon Cabezudo pitched 4.2 innings with six earned runs allowed to take the loss.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the third when Mercy scored three runs to take a 3-0 lead. Jemison singled with one out and later scored on a wild pitch to give Mercy a 1-0 lead. Dolce later singled home senior Joseph Gonzalez (Monroe, N.Y./Rockland CC) to put the Mavericks up, 2-0, and senior Frankie Asaro (East Williston, N.Y./Wheatley) brought home the final run of the inning on a groundout to make it 3-0. The Lions scored a run in the bottom of the third to make it 3-1.
Mercy scored two runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-1 lead. Goins singled and Gonzalez walked before both scored on an Ashline two-run double. Georgian Court scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-5 lead.
The Mavericks regained the lead with four runs in the fifth inning to take a 9-6 lead. Bodin walked with two outs and scored on a Goins double to tie the game at 6-6. Jemison then singled home Altobelli to make it 7-6 and Ashline later singled home Goins and Jemison to give Mercy a 9-6 lead.
Mercy tacked on two runs in the sixth inning to take an 11-6 lead. Asaro walked and Altobelli singled before Goins doubled, scoring Asaro to make it 10-6. Jemison then grounded out to third, scoring Altobelli to make it 11-6.
Georgian Court recorded three runs in the seventh inning to make it 11-9. Mercy scored two more runs in the eighth inning to take a 13-9 lead. Asaro reached on an error and Bodin doubled before Altobelli hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Asaro to make it 12-9. Goins then grounded out to shortstop, scoring Bodin to make it 13-9.
Mercy added a final run in the top of the ninth to make it 14-9. Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and later scored on a freshman Matthew Hesselbirg (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Newfield) RBI groundout. De Castro pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth to give Mercy the 14-9 win.
Mercy had 13 hits and five errors and Georgian Court had nine hits and three errors.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday when they play at D'Youville at 3 p.m.
