DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 9, 2025) – Powered by a game-high three RBI from graduate student Mia Harris (West Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) and a complete game win from senior Skylar Brandemarte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Stonehill College) in game two, the Mercy University softball team dropped an 8-4 decision in game one to Felician University before earning a 5-4 win in game two on Wednesday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Mavericks (12-14) snap a five-game losing streak with the game two win and defeat the Golden Falcons (10-28) for the first time since 2021.
Game 1: Felician 8, Mercy 4
Felician scored a run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Mercy scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) led off the inning with a double and scored on a Harris single to make it 1-1. Sophomore Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) then singled before Harris scored on an error by the catcher to give Mercy a 2-1 lead. Senior Victoria Seppala (Abington, Mass./Abington) then grounded out to first, allowing Miller to score to make it 3-1.
Mercy added a run in the second inning to take a 4-1 lead. Senior Madilyn Lula (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) was hit by a pitch and later scored on a Murphy groundout.
Felician scored two runs in the third and a run in the fourth to tie the game at 4-4.
The Golden Falcons recorded a run in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to take an 8-4 lead. Mercy could not score in the sixth or seventh innings, giving Felician the 8-4 game one win.
Mercy was led by Murphy who went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Harris went 1-for-4 with an RBI and Miller went 1-for-4 with a run. Sophomore Dylan Reyer (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) went 2-for-3 and freshman Keira Jantz (Islip, N.Y./Islip) went 1-for-3. Freshman Lauren McSweeney (Islip, N.Y./Islip) allowed three runs in 3.0 innings to take no-decision. Junior Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) allowed five runs in 3.0 innings to take the loss. Junior Marina Provencio (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus) pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
Felician was led by Kimberly Torres who went 4-for-5 with two RBI. Riley Williams pitched 3.0 shutout innings to earn the win.
Mercy had seven hits and two errors and Felician had 11 hits and two errors.
Game 2: Mercy 5, Felician 4
Mercy scored a run in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead. Freshman Alexis Lemus (Chino, Calif./South Hills) reached on an error by the left fielder and later scored after Harris drew a bases-loaded walk.
Felician evened the score at 1-1 with a run in the top of the third. The Mavericks regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. Jantz walked and Lemus doubled before freshman Jessica Fox (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) singled home Jantz to give Mercy a 2-1 lead.
The Mavericks added three more runs in the sixth inning to take a 5-1 lead. Lula singled to lead off the inning and Murphy later singled before stealing second to put runners on second and third. Harris then doubled home Lula and Murphy to give Mercy a 4-1 lead. Seppala later doubled home Harris to make it 5-1.
Felician scored three runs in the top of the seventh to make it 5-4, but Brandemarte induced a groundout to shortstop with the tying run at third to end the game.
Mercy was led by Harris who went 1-for-2 with three RBI and by Murphy who went 2-for-2. Seppala went 1-for-4 with an RBI and Lemus went 1-for-2. Fox went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Lula went 1-for-2. Brandemarte allowed one earned run in a complete game with three strikeouts to earn her sixth win of the season.
Felician was led by Mikayla Brown who went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Jazel Lopez allowed one earned run in 2.1 innings to take the loss.
Mercy had seven hits and six errors and Felician had seven hits and one error.
Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host Dominican at 2:30 p.m.
