DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (July 30, 2025) – For the 10th year, Mercy University Athletics will recap the year by counting down the Top-10 most memorable moments of the 2024-25 season, with all 10 sports represented.
Mercy University Athletics will release a Top-10 moment, as chosen by the athletics staff, with a recap every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for the next three weeks culminating with the top moment from the 2024-25 athletic year being unveiled on Friday, August 1st.
No. 2 – Men's Lacrosse Advances to ECC Championship Final and Ends Season Nationally Ranked
Coming in at No. 2 in our 2024-25 Top-10 Moments is men's lacrosse who advanced to the ECC Championship Final and ended the season nationally ranked.
Mercy was picked first in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 14-2 in 2024. The Mavericks were ranked No. 5 nationally in the USA Lacrosse Preseason Poll and No. 9 in the USILA Preseason Poll. Junior Devon Duchnowski and sophomore Cameron Dorfman was tabbed USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason All-Americans and Duchnowski was also named Inside Lacrosse Preseason Second Team All-American.
The Mavericks opened their 2025 season on February 15th with a convincing 17-5 win over Franklin Pierce in their home opener. Graduate student Jimmy Osorio had a game-high nine points on five goals and four assists in his Mercy debut. Freshman Cole Hunsberger added five goals in his collegiate debut and sophomore Jake Norton had seven ground balls and two caused turnovers. Mercy won their seventh straight season opener and their 13th straight home opener. After the season-opening win, Hunsberger was named ECC Rookie of the Week and Norton, Osorio, senior Ryan Smith and junior Kenneth Summit were named to the Honor Roll.
Head Coach Ryan MacSpadyen and the Mavericks sat at No. 5 nationally in the USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll and No. 12 in the USILA Poll on February 17th. The Mavericks earned their second straight win when they earned an impressive 21-6 win at Georgian Court on February 18th. Smith had a game-high nine points in the win and freshman Gavin Lamere had a game-high three caused turnovers with four ground balls. Mercy started 2-0 for the seventh straight season.
Mercy ended the week dropping a 11-5 decision to No. 10/14 Bentley on February 23rd. Junior AJ Barone had a team-high-tying two points on a goal and an assist. Following the week, Smith was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week, Lamere was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week and Hunsberger was named to the Honor Roll. Lamere was also named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week on February 27th.
The Mavericks were ranked No. 8 nationally in the USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll and No. 15 in the USILA Poll on February 24th. Mercy began the month of March with a 15-7 loss to eventual National Champion Adelphi on March 1st. Sophomore Christopher Bergersen had a team-high three points and senior Owen Stephenson had a game-high four caused turnovers with five ground balls. Following the week, Stephenson, Bergersen and Dorfman were named to the ECC Honor Roll.
Mercy dropped to No. 10 nationally in the USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll and No. 17 in the USILA Poll. The Mavericks snapped their two-game losing streak on March 8th when they earned a 13-10 win over Florida Tech in Maryland. Osorio had a game-high six points and Duchnowski had three goals. Dorfman added 12 saves to earn the win as Mercy moved to 3-2 on the year. After the win, Dorfman was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and Osorio and Duchnowski were tabbed to the Honor Roll.
MacSpadyen and the Mavericks played at No. 8 Saint Anselm on March 15th. Osorio scored a game-high six goals, but the Mavericks dropped an 18-14 decision to the Hawks. Graduate student Aidan Babnik scored three goals and had an assist. Osorio and Babnik were named to the ECC Honor Roll on March 17th.
The Mavericks sat at No. 11 nationally in the USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll and No. 16 in the USILA Poll on March 17th. Mercy opened ECC play on March 22nd with a 15-6 win at D'Youville. Summit went 19-of-22 on faceoffs and had a game-high 15 ground balls. Babnik added a game-high five points on three goals and two assists and junior Michael Corbo had five ground balls. Mercy won their 10th straight ECC opener and won their 36th straight game against ECC competition. Summit was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week on March 24th and Babnik and Smith were tabbed to the Honor Roll.
Mercy made it two wins in a row on March 29th when they earned a 16-9 win over Roberts Wesleyan. Osorio scored a game-high six goals and seven points, Dorfman made a game-high 11 saves and Stephenson had six ground balls and two caused turnovers as Mercy moved to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in ECC play. Osorio, Dorfman and Hunsberger were named to the ECC Honor Roll on March 31st. Stephenson was named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week on April 2nd.
MacSpadyen and the Mavericks ended the month of March ranked No. 8 nationally in the USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll and No. 17 in the USILA Poll. Mercy began the month of April with a 23-3 win over the District of Columbia on April 5th. 16 different Mavericks recorded a point in the win. Osorio had a game-high six points on five goals and one assist and recorded his 100th career goal. Junior Connor Abrahall had two goals, an assist and a game-high-tying four caused turnovers and sophomore Justin Ortiz had a goal and three assists. Stephenson added seven ground balls, and four caused turnovers and freshman Michael Mitrano went 10-of-12 on faceoffs with seven ground balls. Dorfman made four saves, including the 200th of his career. Junior Peter Murphy made six saves without allowing a goal. Osorio, Stephenson and Mitrano were named to the ECC Honor Roll on April 7th.
The Mavericks won their fourth game in a row on April 12th when they earned a 9-7 win over Frostburg State. Dorfman made 18 saves, and Osorio had a game-high six points as Mercy moved to 7-3 overall and 4-0 in ECC play. Dorfman was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on April 14th and Osorio, Stephenson and Summit were tabbed to the Honor Roll.
MacSpadyen and the Mavericks were ranked No. 9 nationally in the USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll and No. 15 in the USILA Poll on April 14th. Mercy also was one of 10 teams under consideration for an NCAA Tournament berth on April 16th. Osorio was named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week on April 17th.
Mercy recorded their fifth straight win on April 19th after a 19-9 win over St. Thomas Aquinas. 15 different Mavericks recorded a point, and 10 Mavericks had a caused turnover as Mercy secured their 10th straight ECC Championship berth. Osorio scored a game-high-tying four goals and Smith had a game-high six points. Stephenson ended the game with a team-high seven ground balls and a game-high five caused turnovers. Osorio, Smith and Stephenson were named to the ECC Honor Roll on April 21st.
The Mavericks were ranked No. 9 in the second NCAA Regional Rankings on April 23rd and would host No. 15 Molloy on Senior Day on April 25th. Prior to the game, Stephenson, Ryan Resnick, Smith, Ian Votta and Shane Roche were honored for their contributions to the program. Dorfman made a game-high 18 saves and scored the game-winning goal in overtime on a shot from well beyond midfield to give Mercy a 13-12 win over the Lions. Smith had a game-high-tying five points and Osorio had three goals and an assist. The Mavericks won their sixth game in a row and secured their sixth straight ECC Regular Season Championship. Mercy secured the No. 1 seed in the following week's ECC Championship and would host No. 4 seed Roberts Wesleyan in the Semifinals. Dorfman was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and Smith and Stephenson were tabbed to the Honor Roll.
Mercy ended the regular season ranked No. 7 nationally in the USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll and No. 12 in the USILA Poll. Prior to the start of the ECC Championship, Osorio was named ECC Offensive Player of the Year, Stephenson was named Defensive Player of the Year and Hunsberger was tabbed Co-Rookie of the Year. Osorio, Stephenson, Smith, and Norton were named First Team All-ECC and Babnik, Duchnowski, Corbo, Summit and Hunsberger were tabbed Second Team All-ECC.
MacSpadyen and the Mavericks hosted Roberts Wesleyan in the ECC Championship Semifinals on April 30th. Babnik had a game-high four goals and five points and Dorfman made a game-high 13 saves as Mercy earned an 11-8 win over the Redhawks. Mercy won their seventh game in a row and advanced to the Final for the sixth straight time. The Mavericks would host No. 2 seed Molloy in the Final on May 3rd.
Mercy sat at No. 8 in the latest NCAA Regional Rankings on April 30th and Stephenson was named to the USILA Division II Team of the Week on May 1st. Hunsberger scored a team-high three goals in the ECC Championship Final against Molloy, but the Mavericks dropped a hard-fought 11-10 overtime decision to the Lions. Resnick went 12-of-18 on faceoffs with seven ground balls and Dorfman made 11 saves. Mercy ended the season 10-4 just missing out on qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. The Mavericks capped off the season ranked No. 13 nationally in the USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll and No. 16 in the USILA Poll.
After another successful season, the awards began to pile up for Mercy. Osorio, Stephenson, and Norton were named USA Lacrosse Magazine All-American Honorable Mention and Smith, Stephenson and Osorio were tabbed USILA Second Team All-Region. Smith and Osorio also played in the USILA Division I/II Senior All-Star Game. Stephenson was named USILA Second Team All-American and Smith and Osorio received All-American Honorable Mention accolades.
The team also excelled in the classroom with Osorio, Corbo, junior Danny Fitzgerald, Dorfman, Bergersen and Norton being named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team. Smith, Stephenson, and Osorio also were named USILA Scholar All-Americans, and the team earned the USILA Academic Team Award for having a 3.34 cumulative GPA throughout the 2024-25 academic year.
