DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Powered by 17 different Mavericks recording a point and a game-high and career-high-tying 12 saves from senior Peter Murphy (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Port Jefferson), the RV Mercy University Men's Lacrosse Team earned a 22-5 win over ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (7-5, 3-2 ECC) have won two of their last three games and improve to 10-0 all-time against the Spartans (4-10, 1-4 ECC).
Mercy initiated the first quarter with a strong start, as senior Jack Agres (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) opened the scoring at 13:39, assisted by junior Christopher Bergersen (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale). Following the goal, the Mavericks maintained possession with another faceoff win by sophomore Michael Mitrano (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton). Junior James Goodrich (Farmingdale, N.Y./University of Bridgeport) extended the lead with a goal at 11:28, assisted by Agres.
STAC narrowed the gap shortly after with a goal by Christian Rodriguez at 11:22 to make it 2-1. However, Mercy responded decisively with sophomore Cole Hunsberger (Waterloo, Ontario/Grand River Collegiate Institute) scoring at 10:30 and Bergersen adding another at 7:23, assisted again by Agres, to make it 4-1. Mitrano furthered the lead with a goal at 7:10 to put Mercy up, 5-1.
Mercy closed the quarter with a commanding performance, as senior Matthew Magyar (Floral Park, N.Y./Wingate University) scored with an assist from sophomore Liam Neimeth (Farmingville, N.Y./Belmont Abbey College) at 3:12, securing a 6-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Mercy came out strong in the second quarter, immediately setting the pace with a goal by Hunsberger at 13:42, making it 7-1. Following this, the Mavericks' offensive momentum continued with a series of successful plays, including a goal by junior Dillon Osorio (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) assisted by Magyar at 11:16, extending the lead to 8-1.
The Mavericks maintained pressure as senior Devon Duchnowski (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), assisted by freshman Dean Kott (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale), found the net at 10:03, making it 9-1. Mercy's defense held firm, causing multiple turnovers and keeping their opponent scoreless throughout the quarter. Senior Connor Abrahall (Holtsville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist Diocesan) further extended the lead to 10-1 with a goal at 7:38, with Agres providing the assist.
Mercy continued its dominant performance with goals from Agres, junior Jake Norton (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and Magyar, all assisted by Hunsberger, giving the Mavericks a 13-1 lead at 1:36. The quarter closed with Agres and sophomore Benjamin Salamone (Minisink Valley, N.Y./Minisink Valley) adding to the scoreboard, solidifying Mercy's control with a commanding 15-1 lead at halftime.
The third quarter saw Mercy maintain its control with a strong start. Abrahall's early goal at 12:51 made it 16-1. Mercy continued to press with Osorio scoring, assisted by freshman Jackson Wilkinson (Scarborough, Ontario/Everest Academy), extending the lead to 17-1 at 9:50.
St. Thomas Aquinas responded with a goal from Cam Wallace, and another from Lou Takacs, cutting the deficit to 17-3 at 4:06. Despite their efforts, Mercy's defense, led by Murphy's saves, kept the opponent at bay. The quarter ended with a score of 17-3 in favor of Mercy, maintaining a commanding lead into the final quarter.
A Jesse Kovaleski goal to open the fourth quarter made it 17-4 at 13:30. Mercy's offensive unit dominated the fourth quarter, beginning with Wilkinson's goal assisted by Abrahall at 12:32, quickly followed by Salamone's score with an assist from Wilkinson at 10:30, making it 19-4. Junior Colin Orsino (Brookhaven, N.Y./Bellport) extended Mercy's lead with a goal at 9:04, assisted by freshman Brody Kesselring (Dewitt, N.Y./Jamesville DeWitt).
A Rodriguez goal later made it 20-5 with 5:39 left. Mercy maintained pressure as Osorio found the back of the net at 3:20, assisted by Salamone, further widening the gap. Sophomore Christopher DeGiorgio (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) capped Mercy's scoring efforts with a goal at 1:55. Mercy closed the quarter strong, securing a 22–5 victory.
Mercy was led by Agres who had a game-high-tying six points on three goals and three assists. Hunsberger had a game-high-tying six points on two goals and a game-high four assists. Salamone, Abrahall and Magyar each had two goals and an assist and Osorio added three goals. Wilkinson recorded a goal and two assists and Orsino and Bergersen both had a goal and an assist. Goodrich, Duchnowski, Norton, DeGiorgio and Mitrano each added a goal. Neimeth had an assist and two caused turnovers and Kesselring and Kott each recorded an assist. Sophomore Trey Weinstein (Kitchener, Ontario/Newberry College) had a game-high three caused turnovers and five ground balls and sophomore Nicholas Filocamo (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) had two caused turnovers. Mitrano went 6-of-11 on faceoffs with five ground balls and junior Cameron Dorfman (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) made four saves in the first half to earn the win. Murphy made a career-high-tying 12 saves in the second half.
STAC was led by Rodriguez who had a team-high three points on two goals and an assist. Hayden Gaudette made six saves in the first half to take the loss. Jaden Heltzel made five saves in the second half.
Mercy held a 56-37 edge in shots, a 39-28 edge in ground balls and went 14-of-31 on faceoffs.
Head Coach Ryan MacSpadyen and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, April 22nd when they host Bridgeport at 3 p.m.
