Game Preview: Field Hockey Faces Southern Connecticut State and No. 6 Bloomsburg This Weekend

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 12, 2025) – The Mercy University field hockey team plays at Southern Connecticut State University in a non-conference matchup on Saturday, September 13th at 1 p.m. before hosting No. 6 Bloomsburg University in their home opener on Sunday, September 14th at 2 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

Mercy is coming off a season in which they went 6-11 overall and 3-10 in NE10 play. The Mavericks look to qualify for the NE10 Championship for the second time in program history after qualifying for the first time in 2023. Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks were picked 11th in the NE10 Preseason Poll. Leading the returners for the Mavericks is sophomore Charlotte Sabert who had a team-high 14 points on five goals and four assists last season. Junior Madison Preston also returns after posting four goals and four assists and senior Samantha Trickel is back after netting four goals and two assists. Graduate student Jessica Evans returns after scoring three goals last season and sophomores Madison Brefka and Jaime Stella return after combining for two goals and two assists. Senior Reagan Lane returns on defense after posting a team-high seven defensive saves last season. Sophomore Eunice Santiago is also back after recording four defensive saves. Returning in goal is senior Rebecca McClure who went 5-8 with 81 saves, a .757 save percentage and 2.22 goals-against average in 13 starts. Also returning are juniors Kate Lynne Conklin and Alyssa Benvengo and sophomores Adrianna Taynor, Camryn Shea, Lilliauna Tepper and Kaylise McClure. Joining the team as freshmen are Gianna Bevacqua, Izzy Walther, Gwendolyn Smith and Gianna Felice.

The Mavericks are coming off a 4-0 loss at Millersville on Thursday. Mercy was led by senior Rebecca McClure and sophomore Kaylise McClure who combined for 16 saves. Graduate student Jessica Evans, junior Madison Preston and sophomores Charlotte Sabert and Madison Brefka all have one goal and a team-high two points on the year. Rebecca McClure is 1-2 in goal with 14 saves, a .778 save percentage and 1.60 goals-against average. Mercy is 4-6 all-time against Southern Connecticut State and 0-2 all-time against Bloomsburg.

Scouting the Owls

Southern Connecticut State is coming off a 2-0 loss against Southern New Hampshire on Wednesday. The Owls were picked eighth in the NE10 Preseason Poll after going 6-12 last season. Southern Connecticut State has been led by Taylor Leckey who has a team-high three defensive saves and by Rachel Miller who is 0-3 in goal with 19 saves, a .613 save percentage and 5.33 goals-against average.

Scouting the Huskies

Bloomsburg earned a 3-0 win over Pace in their last game on Wednesday. The Huskies were picked fifth in the PSAC Preseason Poll after going 15-6 last season, qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. Bloomsburg is currently ranked No. 6 nationally in the NFHCA Top 10 Poll. The Huskies have been led by Genna Bush who has a team-high six goals and 12 points. Alyxandra Flick has two goals and Raegan Iasiello and Sophie Lawler both have a goal and two assists. Maura Greek is 4-0 in goal with nine saves and no goals allowed in 240 minutes.
