DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Powered by goals from freshmen Astrid Borglund (Stockholm, Sweden/Hersby Gymnasium) and Connor Leahy (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and junior Ana Polychroniades (Smithtown, N.Y./St. John's Preparatory), a game-high two assists from senior Femke Demets (Avelgem, Belgium/University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) and a game-high four saves from junior Anneliese Becker (Stafford, Va./Mountain View), the Mercy University Women's Soccer Team earned a 3-0 win over defending ECC Champion Roberts Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (6-2-3, 3-0 ECC) defeat the Redhawks (5-2-4, 1-2 ECC) in a rematch of last year's ECC Championship Final and the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. Mercy starts 3-0 in ECC play for the first time since 2022.
Becker and Roberts Wesleyan goalie Rebecca Hoffman both made a save in the first 20 minutes of play and Becker made another stop in the final minutes of the opening half to keep the scoreless at halftime.
The Mavericks came out firing in the second half with Borglund giving Mercy a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute after a cross from junior Hailey Metzger (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur). Leahy later gave the Mavericks a 2-0 lead when she fired home a cross from Demets in the 56th minute.
Polychroniades put the Mavericks up 3-0 in the 61st minute when she put home a cross from Demets. Becker closed the game with two saves to preserve the shutout, giving Mercy the 3-0 win.
Mercy was led by Borglund who recorded her team-leading ninth goal of the season and by Leahy who scored her third goal of the year. Polychroniades recorded her second goal of the year, and Demets now has a team-high four assists. Metzger dished out her third assist of the year, and Becker made a game-high four saves to post her third shutout of the year.
Roberts Wesleyan was led by Hoffman who made three saves.
Shots were tied at 8-8, Mercy held a 6-4 edge in shots on goal, and the Mavericks held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Jack Nicholson and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, October 6th when they host Saint Anselm at 12 p.m.
