DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Powered by goals from juniors Joel Martinez (Madrid, Spain/Mount Aloysius College) and Aalon Wilson-Wright (Aranguez, Trinidad & Tobago/Tiffin University) and seniors Jacob Darwesh Lund-Iversen (Oslo, Norway/Maryville University/Pima CC) and Mario de Roque Zazón (Zaragoza, Spain/Newman University) and a game-high six saves from graduate student Sean Green (Asheville, N.C./Lees-McRae College), the No. 23 Mercy University Men's Soccer Team earned a 4-0 win over ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (8-2-2, 2-1 ECC) have won three games in a row and surpass their win total from last year. Mercy improves to 9-2-3 all-time against the Redhawks (2-7-2, 1-4 ECC).
Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when Martinez scored following a through ball from senior Pau Ramon (Mallorca, Spain/Southeastern CC). The Mavericks later made it 2-0 in the 36th minute when Lund-Iversen deflected in a senior John Hollis (Bradford, England/West Virginia Wesleyan College) cross.
Green made a save to close out the half, giving Mercy a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Green stopped two more shots to begin the second half before de Roque Zazón finished off a Lund-Iversen through ball in the 67th minute, giving Mercy a 3-0 lead.
Wilson-Wright made it 4-0 in the 83rd minute when he capitalized off a Roberts Wesleyan turnover. Green stopped two more shots to keep the Redhawks off the scoreboard, giving Mercy the 4-0 win.
Mercy was led by Lund-Iversen who recorded his team-leading 11th goal of the season and his fourth assist of the year. He now has a team-high 26 points. Martinez netted his second goal of the year and his first game-winning goal of the season. De Roque Zazón added his third goal of the year, and Wilson-Wright scored his first goal as a Maverick. Hollis dished out his team-leading eighth assist of the year and Ramon added his first assist of the year. Green made a game-high six saves to earn the win and post his second shutout of the year.
Roberts Wesleyan was led by Mason Simmons who made five saves to take the loss.
Mercy held a 17-8 edge in shots, a 9-6 edge in shots on goal and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 7th when they play at UDC at 2 p.m.
