WASHINGTON, D.C. – Powered by a goal from junior Aalon Wilson-Wright (Aranguez, Trinidad & Tobago/Tiffin University), the No. 18 Mercy University Men's Soccer Team earned a 1-1 draw at ECC foe University of the District of Columbia on Wednesday afternoon at the UDC Turf Field.
The Mavericks (8-2-3, 2-1-1 ECC) record their first ECC draw of the season and remain unbeaten in their last five games. Mercy earns a draw against the Firebirds (4-5-3, 0-3-1 ECC) in the regular season for the second straight year.
UDC scored in the 11th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Christopher Ruiz scored following assists from Cody Williams and Joao De Souza De Aquino.
Senior Jacob Darwesh Lund-Iversen (Oslo, Norway/Maryville University/Pima CC) forced UDC goalie Lorenzo Herrera to make a save in the 22nd minute but the score remained 1-0 at halftime.
The Mavericks tied the score at 1-1 in the 52nd minute when Wilson-Wright fired a shot from outside the box into the top left corner after a cross from Lund-Iversen, tying the game.
Mercy forced Herrera to make six saves in the second half, but were unable to score, ending the game with a 1-1 draw.
Mercy was led by Wilson-Wright who scored his second goal of the season and scored in his second straight game. Lund-Iversen recorded his fifth assist of the year. Graduate student Sean Green (Asheville, N.C./Lees-McRae College) made two saves to earn the draw.
UDC was led by Ruiz who scored and by Herrera who made a game-high seven saves.
Mercy held a 15-8 edge in shots, an 8-4 edge in shots on goal, and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 10th when they play at Staten Island at 2:30 p.m.
