ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Despite a game-high 21 saves from junior Kaylise McClure (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) and a goal and an assist from junior Charlotte Sabert (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) and freshman Addison Testa (Danbury, Conn./Danbury), the Mercy University Field Hockey Team dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision in a penalty shootout at ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan University on Tuesday afternoon.
The Mavericks (1-6, 0-2 ECC) have dropped two games in a row and fall to the Redhawks (4-4, 2-0 ECC) for the second straight time.
McClure made two early saves before Natalee Lawrence scored in the 6th minute to give Roberts Wesleyan a 1-0 lead. Lawrence later made it 2-0 in the final minute of the quarter, giving the Redhawks a 2-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
McClure made three more saves to begin the second quarter before Sabert scored in the 21st minute to make it 2-1, following a Testa assist. The score remained 2-1 in favor of Roberts Wesleyan at halftime.
McClure stopped two more shots in the third quarter to keep the score 2-1, heading to the fourth quarter.
McClure picked up three more saves in the fourth quarter before the Mavericks found the equalizer in the 58th minute. Testa deflected in a Sabert shot after a junior Madison Brefka (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero North Syracuse) penalty corner, tying the game at 2-2. The score remained tied at 2-2 at the end of regulation, sending the game into overtime.
McClure came up with five saves in the first overtime period and Brefka had a breakaway chance stopped by Avery Richardson late in the period, sending the game into a second overtime.
McClure recorded six saves in the second overtime period and Brefka, Sabert and Testa combined to force Richardson to make five saves in the frame, but the score remained tied at 2-2 at the end of the second overtime.
In the penalty shootout, Julia Lukasik and Mary Catherine Maloney scored for the Redhawks and Mercy was held scoreless, giving Roberts Wesleyan the 3-2 shootout win.
Mercy was led by Sabert and Testa who both recorded their second goals and second assists of the year. McClure made a game-high 21 saves to take the loss. Senior Kate Lynne Conklin (Greenvale, N.Y./Franklin Pierce University), sophomore Gwendolyn Smith (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place), junior Jaime Stella (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack) and Testa each recorded a defensive save.
Roberts Wesleyan was led by Lawrence who scored two goals and by Richardson who made seven saves to earn the win.
Roberts Wesleyan held a 35-10 edge in shots, a 27-9 edge in shots on goal and a 13-4 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 10th when they host Molloy at 11 a.m.
