Conklin Tosses Two Touchdown Passes and Brefka and Dixon Add Touchdown Catches as Women's Flag Football Opens Inaugural Season with Three Games

SCHUYLKILL, Pa. – Despite two touchdown passes on the day from junior Kate Lynne Conklin (Greenvale, N.Y./North Shore) and touchdown receptions from sophomore Madison Brefka (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero North Syracuse) and senior Ancksu Dixon (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport), the Mercy University Women's Flag Football Team opened its inaugural season with a 54-0 loss to Mount St. Mary's University, a 28-6 loss to Penn State Schuylkill and a 27-13 loss to Kean University on Saturday afternoon at Blue Mountain High School.

The Mavericks (0-3) begin their first-ever season with the three games against Mount St Mary's (2-0), Penn State Schuylkill (2-2) and Kean (2-1).

Game 1: Mount St. Mary's 54, Mercy 0

Conklin led the Mavericks with eight yards passing and gained 26 yards on the ground. Junior Alyssa Benvengo (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) and sophomore Kaylise McClure (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) each recorded one reception for four yards.

Mount St. Mary's was led by Jenna Dick who threw for 89 yards and three touchdowns.

Mercy recorded 40 total yards with eight passing yards and 32 rushing yards. Mount St. Mary's had 171 total yards with 89 yards passing and 82 rushing yards.

Game 2: Penn State Schuylkill 28, Mercy 6

Conklin threw the first touchdown pass in program history in the first quarter on a 41-yard pass to Brefka.

Conklin recorded 154 yards passing and recorded her first career touchdown pass, while adding 26 yards rushing. Brefka recorded the first touchdown catch in program history and Dixon had three receptions for 38 yards and added an interception. Freshman Anna Palmieri (Queens, N.Y.) added two receptions for 38 yards and sophomore Charlotte Sabert (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) recorded one reception for 24 yards. Sophomore Jaime Stella (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack) contributed 23 yards rushing and two catches for 13 yards.

Penn State was led by Abree Brown who threw for four touchdowns and 200 yards.

Mercy had 203 total yards with 154 yards passing and 49 yards rushing. Penn State had 223 total yards, 200 yards passing and 23 yards rushing.

Game 3: Kean 27, Mercy 13

Conklin tossed her second touchdown pass of the day to Dixon on a 31-yard pass in the 2nd quarter.

Stella added an interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Conklin recorded 66 yards passing with one touchdown pass and 22 yards rushing. Dixon had two catches for 46 yards and her first touchdown reception and Brefka added two catches for 20 yards.

Kean was led by Jazriel Miranda who recorded 187 yards passing and three touchdowns.

Mercy had 90 total yards with 66 passing yards and 24 yards rushing. Kean had 249 total yards with 194 yards passing and 55 yards rushing.

Head Coach Mike Perrota and the Mavericks resume action on Monday, March 9th when they play at Montclair State at 5 p.m.
