MELBOURNE, Fla. – Despite junior Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) recording her 100th career hit in game one, the Mercy University Softball Team dropped a 3-2 decision to Saint Anselm College before falling 12-4 to Minot State University on Monday afternoon in Florida.
The Mavericks (1-5) have dropped three games in a row, while the Hawks (6-7) snap a five-game losing streak and the Beavers (14-7) have won three games in a row.
Game 1: Saint Anselm 3, Mercy 2
Saint Anselm took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Caitlyn Duquette RBI single. The Mavericks tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first. Murphy led off the inning with a double for her 100th career hit and later scored on a junior Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) RBI single.
Mercy took a 2-1 lead in the third inning. Murphy walked and stole second before scoring after freshman Emma Jackson (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) reached on an error by the pitcher.
The Hawks took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning on a two-run double by Madeline Trisket.
Mercy was unable to tie the game, giving Saint Anselm the 3-2 win.
Mercy was led by Murphy who went 1-for-3 with two runs, becoming the 20th Maverick in program history to record 100 career hits. Miller went 3-for-4 with an RBI and sophomore Mikaela Mammola (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) went 2-for-3. Freshman Juliana Abbene (Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale) pitched a complete game with three strikeouts to take the loss.
Saint Anselm was led by Trisket who went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Kendra Lee pitched a complete game with six strikeouts to earn the win.
Mercy had six hits and one error, and Saint Anselm had six hits and one error.
Game 2: Minot State 12, Mercy 4 (5 Innings)
Minot State scored 10 runs in the first inning on seven hits and two errors to take a 10-0 lead.
The Mavericks scored a run in the second inning to make it 10-1. Senior Elizabeth Stark (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) walked and junior Onnika DeBruhl (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) singled before sophomore Alexis Lemus (Chino, Calif./South Hills) sacrificed the runners to second and third. Mammola then reached on an error by the pitcher, scoring Stark.
The Beavers added two runs in the third inning to take a 12-1 lead.
Mercy recorded two runs in the fourth inning to make it 12-3. DeBruhl led off the inning with a double and Lemus walked before Mammola sacrificed both runners to second and third. DeBruhl then scored on a passed ball to make it 12-2 and Lemus scored on a wild pitch to make it 12-3.
The Mavericks added another run in the fifth inning to make it 12-4. Sophomore Jessica Fox (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) led off the inning with a walk and Stark and Lemus also walked to load the bases. Mammola then singled home Fox to make it 12-4. A flyout to right field ended the game, giving Minot State the 12-4 win via the run-rule.
Mercy was led by Mammola who went 1-for-2 with two RBI. DeBruhl went 2-for-3 with a run and Fox went 1-for-1 with a run. Jackson went 1-for-3 and freshman Kady Olsen (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) allowed seven earned runs to take the loss.
Minot State was led by Anna LaCount who went 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBI. Kierra Fournier pitched a complete game with four runs allowed and four strikeouts to earn the win.
Mercy had five hits and two errors and Minot State had nine hits and one error.
Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they face Saint Michael's at 10 a.m. and Ohio Dominican at 12:15 p.m. in Florida.
