DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Powered by 16 different Mavericks recording a point, the RV Mercy University Men's Lacrosse Team earned a 22-5 win over ECC foe University of the District of Columbia on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (5-3, 1-1 ECC) snap a two-game losing streak and defeat the Firebirds (1-5, 0-2 ECC) for the 10th straight time.
Mercy opened the first quarter with strong momentum, as senior Matthew Magyar (Floral Park, N.Y./Wingate University) scored the first goal at 13:19 with an assist from junior Colin Orsino (Brookhaven, N.Y./Bellport). Following that, Mercy continued to dominate possession, with sophomore Christopher DeGiorgio (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) making it 2-0 and Magyar adding another goal to give the Mavericks a 3-0 lead at the 8:37 mark.
Sophomore Cole Hunsberger (Waterloo, Ontario/Grand River Collegiate Institute) scored his first goal at the 7:17 mark, assisted by sophomore Kyle Freyer (Syracuse, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) to make it 4-0 and DeGiorgio netted his second goal of the game, following a sophomore Benjamin Salamone (Minisink Valley, N.Y./Minisink Valley) assist, to give Mercy a 5-0 lead. Freshman Dean Kott (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and junior James Goodrich (Farmingdale, N.Y./University of Bridgeport) then netted back-to-back goals to make it 7-0 with 4:01 left in the quarter. Sophomore Jackson Redmond (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) capped off the scoring in the quarter to give Mercy an 8-0 lead after the first quarter. The Mavericks held UDC to just one shot on goal in the quarter with junior Cameron Dorfman (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) making one save to keep the Firebirds scoreless.
Mercy seized control in the second quarter with a series of strategic plays and successful conversions. Hunsberger initiated the scoring with an early goal at 13:53, assisted by Kott, setting the tone for the quarter. Senior Jack Agres (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) followed quickly with another goal, assisted by Hunsberger, extending the lead to 10-0 with 12:02 left in the half.
The momentum continued as Hunsberger added another goal, this time assisted by Agres, maintaining pressure on the Firebirds. Salamone and freshman Brody Kesselring (Dewitt, N.Y./Jamesville DeWitt) each found the back of the net, with assists from sophomore Trey Weinstein (Kitchener, Ontario/Newberry College) and unassisted, respectively, making it 13-0. Mercy's defense remained unyielding, preventing District Columbia from capitalizing on their attempts.
As the quarter drew to a close, Mercy's offensive prowess was highlighted by additional goals from Salamone and freshman Sheamus Alazraki (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), with freshman Jared Cripps (Dracut, Mass./Methuen) assisting the latter. Mercy finished the quarter with a commanding 15–0 lead, effectively shutting out UDC.
Alazraki scored again at 11:34 in the third quarter to make it 16-0. Shortly after, senior Connor Abrahall (Holtsville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist Diocesan) added another goal at 10:47, extending Mercy's lead to 17-0. Despite a response from the Firebirds' Patrick Nyarko at 9:48 and Amarius Sekajipo at 6:53, Mercy maintained momentum, with Abrahall scoring again at 5:33 off an assist from Cripps. Cripps then contributed with a goal at 4:53, assisted by junior Justin Ortiz (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East), furthering the advantage to 19-2.
The Firebirds managed to close the gap slightly with a late goal by Myles Henry at 00:58. The third quarter concluded with Mercy maintaining a solid lead, the score standing at 19–3.
The fourth quarter began with the Firebirds capitalizing with a man-up goal from Myles Henry to make it 19-4. However, Mercy responded decisively. Abrahall initiated a scoring run with a goal at 11:19, followed by Alazraki and an unassisted effort from Ortiz, extending Mercy's lead to 22–4.
Despite a late man-up goal from Kelvin Pham of the Firebirds, Mercy maintained its commanding position. The game concluded with Mercy cruising to a 22-5 win.
Mercy was led by Hunsberger who had a game-high five points on three goals and two assists. Alazraki and Abrahall both added three goals and Salamone recorded two goals and an assist. Magyar scored two goals and DeGiorgio scored his first two collegiate goals. Cripps had a goal and two assists and Ortiz, Agres, and Kott each had a goal and an assist. Kesselring recorded his first collegiate goal and added an assist and Goodrich and Redmond both added a goal. Freyer dished out two assists and Weinstein and Orsino both recorded an assist. Senior Daniel Fitzgerald (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) had two caused turnovers, junior Jack Magyar (Floral Park, N.Y./Nassau CC) had two caused turnovers and five ground balls and Kott added two caused turnovers. Freshman Dillon Halloran (Nesconset, N.Y./Sachem North) went 11-of-13 on faceoffs with a career-high seven ground balls and junior Zack Ouassil (Marrakech, Morocco/CCBC Essex/Newberry College) went 11-of-14 on faceoffs with three ground balls. Dorfman made one save in the first quarter to earn the win. Freshman Mikey Vitale (Islip, N.Y./Islip) made three saves in the final three quarters.
UDC was led by Myles Henry who had a team-high two goals. Israel Amajioyi made a game-high 15 saves to take the loss.
Mercy held a 52-18 edge in shots, a 37-9 edge in shots on goal, a 53-24 edge in ground balls and went 24-of-31 on faceoffs.
Head Coach Ryan MacSpadyen and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, March 25th when they play at Adelphi at 7 p.m.
