DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Despite a game-high three RBI from junior Dylan Koch (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Pace University), the Mercy University Baseball Team dropped an 8-7 decision in 10 innings to regionally-ranked Felician University on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (11-12) have dropped three games in a row, while the Golden Falcons (14-9) have won two games in a row.
Felician scored three runs in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead and scored a run in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead.
Mercy recorded four runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 4-4. Junior Nevin Scaperotti (Stormville, N.Y./Carmel) walked, graduate student Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) doubled and senior Kolongi Goins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./FDR) walked to load the bases. Koch then doubled down the left field line, clearing the bases to make it 4-3. Sophomore Anthony Altobelli (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) then singled home Koch to make it 4-4.
Felician regained the lead with a run in the fourth inning to take a 5-4 lead.
The score remained 5-4 until the sixth inning when Mercy scored two runs to take a 6-5 lead. Senior David Bernard Jr. (Schenectady, N.Y./Herkimer CC), Goins and Koch walked to load the bases. Senior John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) then singled home Bernard Jr. to make it 5-5 and senior Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) recorded a sacrifice fly, scoring Goins to give Mercy a 6-5 lead.
Mercy tacked on a run in the eighth inning to take a 7-5 lead. Ashline hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Koch.
Felician scored two runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 7-7.
The Golden Falcons took an 8-7 lead in the top of the 10th on a Braden Walsh double. The Mavericks went down in order in the bottom of the 10th to give Felician the 8-7 win.
Mercy was led by Koch who went 3-for-4 with three RBI and by Ashline who went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Altobelli went 1-for-6 with an RBI and Nisco went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Hoti went 1-for-5 and Goins went 1-for-3 with two runs. Sophomore Owen Brink (Hyde Park, N.Y./FDR) made the start on the mound and went 2.1 innings with two earned runs allowed to earn a no-decision. Sophomore Derek Fernandez (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) pitched 5.0 innings of relief with no earned runs allowed and four strikeouts. Sophomore Geneo Savoca (Albany, N.Y./University at Albany) allowed one run in 1.0 inning to take the loss.
Felician was led by Ernesto Polanco who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Andrew Gendi pitched 2.2 shutout innings to earn the win.
Mercy had 10 hits and two errors and Felician had 12 hits and no errors.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, March 27th when they play at D'Youville at 3 p.m.
