DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Powered by a combined shutout from sophomores Carly Gaffney (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton Area) and Lauren McSweeney (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and RBI from juniors Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) and Julianna Coluccio (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional), sophomore Jessica Fox (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) and freshman Madelyn Perrone (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) in game two, the Mercy University Softball Team dropped a 4-0 decision to Jefferson University in game one before earning a 4-0 win in game two on Sunday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Mavericks (6-8) have won three of their last four games, while the Rams (9-11) snap a six-game losing streak with the game one win.
Game 1: Jefferson 4, Mercy 0
Jefferson scored all four of their runs in the third inning. Liv Stevens hit a three-run home run to make it 3-0 and Lily Hutt followed with a solo home run to give the Rams a 4-0 lead.
Mercy was unable to score, giving Jefferson the 4-0 game-one win.
Mercy was led by junior Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) who went 1-for-2 and by Miller, Coluccio and freshman Juliana Abbene (Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale) who went 1-for-3. Freshman Mya Marelli (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) allowed four runs in 3.0 innings to take the loss. Senior Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) pitched 3.0 shutout innings with five strikeouts and senior Marina Provencio (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus) pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
Jefferson was led by Stevens who went 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Alix Delaney pitched a complete game shutout with six strikeouts to earn the win.
Mercy had four hits and no errors and Jefferson had six hits and no errors.
Game 2: Mercy 4, Jefferson 0
Mercy took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Murphy reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a Miller triple down the left field line to make it 1-0. Coluccio then doubled down the left field line, scoring Miller to make it 2-0.
The Mavericks added two more runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead. Miller and Coluccio singled with two outs before Fox singled to left field, scoring Miller to make it 3-0. Perrone later singled home Coluccio to put Mercy up, 4-0.
McSweeney held the Rams scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings to give Mercy the 4-0 game-two win.
Mercy was led by Miller, Coluccio, Fox and Perrone who all went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore Alexis Lemus (Chino, Calif./South Hills) went 1-for-3 and Gaffney pitched 2.0 scoreless innings to earn a no-decision. McSweeney pitched the final 5.0 innings with one hit allowed and two strikeouts to earn her second win of the year.
Jefferson was led by Mackenzie Ward and Devin Brandley who both went 2-for-3. Lauren Bernaiche allowed two earned runs in 4.2 innings to take the loss.
Mercy had nine hits and one error and Jefferson had four hits and one error.
Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, March 31st when they host Bridgeport for a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.
