Stark, Coluccio and DeBruhl Record Team-High Three RBI as Softball Sweeps Bridgeport

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Powered by a team-high three RBI on the day from senior Elizabeth Stark (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and juniors Julianna Coluccio (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional) and Onnika DeBruhl (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend), the Mercy University Softball Team earned 10-9 and 8-4 wins over University of Bridgeport on Tuesday afternoon at Smith Field.

The Mavericks (8-8) have won five of their last six games and sweep the Purple Knights (17-13) for the first time since 2021.

Game 1: Mercy 10, Bridgeport 9

Bridgeport took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an Isabella Benjamin home run to center field. The Mavericks tied the score at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the inning. Coluccio singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a freshman Emma Jackson (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) RBI single.

Mercy scored six runs in the third inning to take a 7-1 lead. Junior Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) singled and stole second before junior Dylan Reyer (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) walked and junior Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) singled to load the bases. Coluccio then singled down the left field line scoring Murphy and Reyer to give Mercy a 3-1 lead. Freshman Madelyn Perrone (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) later singled home Coluccio to make it 4-1. Stark later hit a three-run double to left field, giving Mercy a 7-1 lead.

Bridgeport scored three runs in the fourth inning to make it 7-4. The Mavericks responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 9-4. Reyer walked and Miller singled before Coluccio singled home Reyer to make it 8-4. Miller then scored to make it 9-4.

The Purple Knights scored four runs in the fifth inning to make it 9-8. Mercy made it 10-8 in the fifth inning on a Reyer RBI double to give the Mavericks a 10-8 lead.

Bridgeport scored a run in the sixth inning to make it 10-9, but senior Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) held the Purple Knights scoreless for the remainder of the game to give Mercy the 10-9 game-one win.

Mercy was led by Stark who went 3-for-3 with three RBI and by Coluccio who went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Jackson went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Reyer went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Murphy went 2-for-4 and Miller went 2-for-4. Perrone went 1-for-3 with an RBI and senior Marina Provencio (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus) allowed four runs in 3.2 innings to take a no-decision. Secoda allowed two earned runs in 3.1 innings with eight strikeouts to earn her third win of the season.

Bridgeport was led by Mya Jones who went 3-for-4. Samantha Sponder allowed six runs in 1.0 innings to take the loss.

Mercy had 14 hits and three errors and Bridgeport had nine hits and no errors.

Game 2: Mercy 8, Bridgeport 4 (6 Innings)

Bridgeport took a 1-0 lead on a Sydnee Perreault lead off home run.

Mercy scored two runs in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead. Perrone singled, Stark was hit by a pitch and Jackson walked to load the bases. DeBruhl then drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Perrone to make it 1-1. Murphy later singled home Jackson to give Mercy a 2-1 lead.

Bridgeport scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead.

The Mavericks scored six runs in the fifth inning to take an 8-4 lead. Coluccio reached on an error and Perrone and Stark singled to load the bases. Jackson then drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Coluccio to make it 4-3. DeBruhl then hit a double down the left field line, scoring Perrone and Stark to give Mercy a 5-4 lead. Murphy later singled home Jackson to make it 6-4 and Reyer hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring DeBruhl to make it 7-4. Murphy later scored after an error by the left fielder after Coluccio singled to give Mercy an 8-4 lead.

Freshman Juliana Abbene (Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale) pitched a scoreless sixth inning to give Mercy the 8-4 game-two win and the sweep after the game was called due to darkness.

Mercy was led by DeBruhl who went 1-for-2 with three RBI and by Murphy who went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Perrone went 2-for-3 with two runs and Stark and Coluccio both went 1-for-3 with a run. Miller went 1-for-4 and sophomore Lauren McSweeney (Islip, N.Y./Islip) allowed four runs in 3.0 innings to earn a no-decision. Abbene pitched 3.0 shutout innings with two hits allowed to earn her third win of the season.

Bridgeport was led by Jones who went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Hailey Smith allowed two earned runs in 1.1 innings to take the loss.

Mercy had nine hits and one error and Bridgeport had six hits and three errors.

Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, April 2nd when they play at Molloy starting at 3:30 p.m.
