DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Despite a home run and two RBI on the day from senior Sean McAdams (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe), the Mercy University Baseball Team dropped 6-4 and 5-4 decisions to Pace University on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (6-8) have dropped five games in a row and have dropped 10 straight meetings to the Setters (4-4).
Game 1: Pace 6, Mercy 4
The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning Pace scored a run on a Benjamin Tullo sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead.
The Setters scored a run in the fifth inning on three hits to take a 2-0 lead. The Mavericks got a run back in the bottom of the inning to make it 2-1. McAdams doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on a junior Dylan Koch (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Pace University) sacrifice fly.
Mercy took the lead in the bottom of the sixth with two runs. Sophomore Matthew Hesselbirg (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Newfield) walked and senior Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) singled before graduate student Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) hit a two-run single down the left field line, giving Mercy a 3-2 lead.
Pace tied the game in the seventh inning on a Brayden Sweppenhiser RBI single.
The Setters scored three runs in the eighth inning to take a 6-3 lead. Mercy scored a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-4. Junior Kyle Engmann (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) walked to lead off the inning and scored on a senior David Bernard Jr. (Schenectady, N.Y./Herkimer CC) sacrifice fly.
Mercy was unable to score in the ninth inning, giving Pace the 6-4 game one win.
Mercy was led by Hoti who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and by Bernard Jr. who went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore Anthony Altobelli (Kings Park, N.Y/Kings Park) went 3-for-5 and Ashline went 2-for-3. Koch went 1-for-4 with an RBI and senior John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) went 1-for-5. McAdams went 1-for-4 with a run and senior Kolongi Goins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./FDR) went 1-for-4. Junior Nevin Scaperotti (Stormville, N.Y./Carmel) made the start and allowed two runs with two strikeouts in 5.0 innings to take a no-decision. Sophomore Geneo Savoca (Albany, N.Y./University at Albany) allowed two earned runs in 2.0 innings to take the loss. Freshman Dylan Ruland (Islip, N.Y./Islip) pitched 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.
Pace was led by Cristian Rodriguez who went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Brendan McCann allowed one run in 3.0 innings to earn the win.
Mercy had 12 hits and one error and Pace had 13 hits and no errors.
Game 2: Pace 5, Mercy 4
Pace took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an Anthony Depetro RBI double. Mercy scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. Nisco doubled with two outs and McAdams followed with a home run to left center, giving the Mavericks a 2-1 lead. Savoca walked and stole second before scoring on a Bernard Jr. RBI single to make it 3-1.
The Setters tied the game at 3-3 in the second inning on a George Provel two-run double.
Pace took a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning on a Depetro RBI single. The Mavericks tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Goins singled to lead off the inning and later scored after Pace turned a double play with the bases loaded to make it 4-4.
The Setters scored an unearned run in the seventh inning to take a 5-4 lead. Mercy went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, giving Pace the game two win.
Mercy was led by McAdams who went 1-for-2 with his first home run of the season and two RBI. Bernard Jr. went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Nisco and Goins both went 2-for-3 with a run. Koch went 1-for-4 and Engmann went 1-for-3. Sophomore Gordon Votruba (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) allowed three earned runs in 5.0 innings to take a no-decision. Ruland pitched 1.2 innings of relief with no earned runs allowed to take the loss.
Pace was led by Depetro who went 4-for-4 with two RBI. Dominic Carleo pitched 3.0 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.
Mercy had eight hits and three errors and Pace had eight hits and one error.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, March 13th when they host D'Youville for a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
