DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Powered by home runs from juniors Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) and Julianna Coluccio (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional) and complete game wins from senior Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and sophomore Lauren McSweeney (Islip, N.Y./Islip), the Mercy University Softball Team earned 9-3 and 8-0 wins over ECC foe College of Staten Island on Friday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Mavericks (14-12, 7-3 ECC) snap a two-game losing streak and extend their winning streak over the Dolphins (9-13, 4-4 ECC) to seven games.
Game 1: Mercy 9, Staten Island 3
Mercy took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Junior Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) and Coluccio walked with two outs before freshman Madelyn Perrone (Ballston, Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) singled home Miller to make it 1-0. Senior Elizabeth Stark (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) then singled to load the bases before freshman Emma Jackson (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Coluccio to make it 2-0.
Staten Island took a 3-2 lead in the top of the second on a Taryn Judson three-run home run.
The Mavericks regained the lead in the fourth inning, scoring four runs to take a 6-3 lead. Junior Dylan Reyer (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) tripled to lead off the inning and scored after Murphy reached on an error by the pitcher, tying the game at 3-3. Miller walked before Coluccio singled up the middle, scoring Murphy to make it 4-3. Jackson later doubled home Coluccio and Stark to give Mercy a 6-3 lead.
Mercy tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning to take a 9-3 lead. Miller singled to lead off the inning and stole second before Coluccio hit a home run to left field, giving Mercy an 8-3 lead. Jackson later singled before sophomore Jessica Fox (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) doubled home Jackson to make it 9-3.
Secoda held the Dolphins scoreless in the seventh inning to give Mercy the 9-3 game-one win.
Mercy was led by Coluccio who went 2-for-3 with her third home run of the season, three RBI and three runs. Jackson went 2-for-3 with three RBI and Murphy went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Perrone went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Fox went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Miller went 2-for-2 with two runs and Reyer went 2-for-5 with a run. Stark went 1-for-4 and sophomore Mikaela Mammola (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) went 1-for-4. Secoda allowed three runs in seven innings with three strikeouts to earn her fifth win of the season.
Staten Island was led by Judson who went 1-for-3 with three RBI. Kennedie Ruth allowed five earned runs in 5.0 innings to take the loss.
Mercy had 13 hits and one error and Staten Island had five hits and one error.
Game 2: Mercy 8, Staten Island 0 (5 Innings)
Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Reyer singled and scored on a Murphy double.
Murphy gave Mercy a 2-0 lead with a lead off home run to right center in the third inning.
The Mavericks scored four runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead. Jackson and junior Onnika DeBruhl (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) led off the inning with singles and Reyer walked to load the bases. Murphy then singled home Jackson to make it 3-0 and Miller drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-0. Coluccio later singled home Reyer to make it 5-0 and Perrone hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Murphy to put Mercy up, 6-0.
Mercy scored two runs in the fifth inning to earn the 8-0 walk-off win via the run-rule. Jackson singled, DeBruhl reached on an error and Mammola singled to load the bases. Reyer then hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Jackson to make it 7-0. Murphy then doubled home DeBruhl to give Mercy the 8-0 walk-off win via the run-rule.
Mercy was led by Murphy who went 4-for-4 with her third home run of the season and four RBI. Reyer went 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs and Miller went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Coluccio went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Jackson and Mammola both went 2-for-3. DeBruhl went 1-for-2 with two runs and McSweeney allowed just one hit in five innings with two strikeouts to earn her fifth win of the season.
Staten Island was led by Rose Joseph who went 1-for-2. Marena Grenier allowed six runs in 3.1 innings to take the loss.
Mercy had 12 hits and one error and Staten Island had one hit and two errors.
Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, April 12th when they host Holy Family for Senior Day at 12 p.m.
