DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Powered by complete game wins from seniors Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and Marina Provencio (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus) and a team-high four RBI on the day from junior Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland), the Mercy University Softball Team earned 7-3 and 6-1 wins over Holy Family University on Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at Smith Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game, the Mavericks honored Secoda, Provencio and Elizabeth Stark (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) for their contributions to the program.
The Mavericks (16-12) have won four games in a row and improve to 9-3 at home this season. The Tigers (12-18) have dropped five of their last seven games.
Game 1: Mercy 7, Holy Family 3
Holy Family took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Mercy scored two runs in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead. Freshman Emma Jackson (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) singled and sophomore Mikaela Mammola (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) singled before junior Dylan Reyer (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) reached on an error by the second baseman, scoring Jackson to make it 1-1. Murphy then grounded out to shortstop, allowing Mammola to score to make it 2-1.
The Tigers tied the game at 2-2 in the third inning on a Kylee Jones RBI single.
Holy Family took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning on a Franceska Celebre RBI single.
Mercy exploded for five runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-3 lead. Sophomore Jessica Fox (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) singled with two outs and sophomore Alexis Lemus (Chino, Calif./South Hills) pinch ran for Fox. Mammola singled and Reyer walked to load the bases. Murphy then doubled to left field, plating three runs, to give Mercy a 5-3 lead. Junior Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) then singled before junior Julianna Coluccio (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional) doubled home Murphy and Miller to make it 7-3.
Secoda pitched a scoreless seventh inning to give Mercy the 7-3 game-one win.
Mercy was led by Secoda who pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts to earn her sixth win of the season. Murphy went 1-for-4 with a game-high four RBI and Coluccio went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Mammola and Reyer both went 2-for-3 and Miller, Jackson and Fox all went 1-for-4.
Holy Family was led by Kylee Jones who went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Kinsley Hall allowed five earned runs in 6.0 innings to take the loss.
Mercy had 10 hits and no errors and Holy Family had seven hits and one error.
Game 2: Mercy 6, Holy Family 1
Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Reyer walked and stole second before scoring on a Miller double.
Holy Family tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning on a Madison Grubb sacrifice fly.
The Mavericks scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Freshman Mya Marelli (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) walked and Jackson singled before junior Onnika DeBruhl (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) doubled home both Marelli and Jackson to make it 3-1. Reyer later doubled home DeBruhl to give Mercy a 4-1 lead.
Mercy tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-1 lead. DeBruhl led off the inning with a hit by pitch and advanced to second on a groundout. Reyer then singled home DeBruhl to make it 5-1. Miller later brought home Reyer with a triple to make it 6-1.
That would be more than enough run support for Provencio who went the distance with just 85 pitches thrown, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out one to earn the win.
Mercy was led by Reyer who went 3-for-3 with two RBI and by Miller who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. DeBruhl went 1-for-2 with two RBI and Jackson went 2-for-3. Coluccio went 1-for-4 and Provencio picked up her first win of the season.
Holy Family was led by Rylee Hobel who went 2-for-3. Olivia George allowed four runs in 4.0 innings to take the loss.
Mercy had nine hits and no errors and Holy Family had three hits and one error.
Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, April 14th when they play at STAC at 2:30 p.m.
