SPARKILL, N.Y. – Despite a team-high two RBI on the day from junior Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland), the Mercy University Softball Team dropped 10-2 and 5-4 decisions at ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday afternoon at Spartan Field.
The Mavericks (16-14, 7-5 ECC) see their four-game winning streak come to an end and drop all four meetings to the Spartans (20-12, 10-2 ECC) this season.
Game 1: STAC 10, Mercy 2 (5 Innings)
The Spartans scored two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.
The Mavericks scored two runs in the second inning to tie the game at 2-2. Freshman Emma Jackson (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) reached on a fielder's choice and sophomore Jessica Fox (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) singled. Junior Dylan Reyer (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) later reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Jackson to score to make it 2-1. Murphy then singled home Fox to tie the game.
STAC scored three runs in the third and fourth inning to take an 8-2 lead.
The Spartans scored two runs in the fifth inning on a Nayah Diaz two-run home run to earn the 10-2 win via the run-rule.
Mercy was led by Murphy who went 1-for-2 with an RBI and by Fox and freshman Madelyn Perrone (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) who both went 1-for-2. Junior Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) went 1-for-3 and senior Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) allowed four earned runs in 3.0 innings to take the loss.
STAC was led by Diaz who went 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBI. Lauren Falk pitched a complete game with no earned runs allowed to earn the win.
Mercy had four hits and two errors and STAC had nine hits and one error.
Game 2: STAC 5, Mercy 4
STAC took a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning on an Alyssa Haberstroh grand slam.
The Mavericks scored four runs in the sixth inning to tie the game at 4-4. Sophomore Mikaela Mammola (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch before scoring on a Murphy double to make it 4-1. Miller singled and junior Julianna Coluccio (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional) reached on an error to load the bases. Perrone then singled home Murphy to make it 4-2. Jackson then singled home Miller to make it 4-3 and junior Onnika DeBruhl (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Coluccio to tie the game.
Adriana Coira led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run to center field, giving STAC the 5-4 walk-off win in game two and the sweep.
Mercy was led by Perrone who went 1-for-2 with an RBI and by Jackson who went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Murphy went 1-for-4 with an RBI and Mammola went 1-for-3 with a run. Reyer and Miller both went 1-for-4 and sophomore Lauren McSweeney (Islip, N.Y./Islip) allowed five runs in 6.0 innings to take the loss.
STAC was led by Haberstroh who went 2-for-3 with four RBI. Emma Grace Popp allowed three earned runs in a complete game to earn the win.
Mercy had six hits and one error and STAC had six hits and two errors.
