BUFFALO, N.Y. – Powered by a team-high four RBI and five hits from junior Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) and a complete-game win from sophomore Lauren McSweeney (Islip, N.Y./Islip) in game one, the Mercy University Softball Team earned 4-1 and 10-5 wins at ECC foe D'Youville University on Sunday afternoon.
The Mavericks (18-14, 9-5 ECC) snap a two-game losing streak and sweep a doubleheader at the Saints (14-16, 4-8 ECC) for the first time since 2021. Mercy sweeps the season series with D'Youville for the first time since 2021.
Game 1: Mercy 4, D'Youville 1
Mercy took a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Freshman Makayla Rady (Wharton, N.J./Morris Knolls) singled to lead off the inning and freshman Emma Jackson (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) later reached on an error by the third baseman. Murphy then singled home Rady and Jackson to make it 2-0. Junior Julianna Coluccio (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional) later brought home Murphy after reaching on an error by the third baseman to make it 3-0.
D'Youville made it 3-1 in the bottom of the third on a Danielle Fenlong sacrifice fly.
The Mavericks added a run in the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Murphy tripled with one out and scored on a junior Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) RBI single.
McSweeney held the Saints scoreless in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to give Mercy the 4-1 game-one win.
Mercy was led by Murphy who went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs. Miller went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Rady went 2-for-3 with a run. Junior Dylan Reyer (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) and senior Elizabeth Stark (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) both went 1-for-3 and Jackson went 1-for-4. McSweeney pitched a complete game with one run and four hits allowed to earn her sixth win of the season.
D'Youville was led by Frankie Morris who went 1-for-2. Summer Clark allowed one earned run to take the loss.
Mercy had 10 hits and no errors and D'Youville had four hits and two errors.
Game 2: Mercy 10, D'Youville 5 (6 Innings)
D'Youville scored two runs in the fifth inning and three runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead.
Mercy scored six runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-5 lead. Sophomore Mikaela Mammola (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) walked and stole second before Jackson walked. Murphy then doubled to left field, scoring Mammola and Jackson to make it 5-2. Miller then doubled home Murphy to make it 5-3. Coluccio walked and freshman Madelyn Perrone (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) reached on an error by the pitcher, allowing Miller and Coluccio to score to make it 5-5. Jackson later drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Perrone to give Mercy a 6-5 lead.
Freshman Juliana Abbene (Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale) retired the Saints in order in the bottom of the fifth.
Mercy scored four runs in the sixth inning to take a 10-5 lead. Coluccio walked and stole second before Perrone reached on a wild pitch. Reyer then walked to load the bases before Rady drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Coluccio to make it 7-5. Sophomore Jessica Fox (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) then hit a bases-clearing double to give Mercy a 10-5 lead. After Fox advanced to third on a passed ball, the game was called due to weather, giving the Mavericks a 10-5 game-two win and the sweep.
Mercy was led by Fox who went 1-for-4 with three RBI. Murphy went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Miller went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Rady went 1-for-3 with an RBI and senior Marina Provencio (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus) allowed two runs in 0.1 innings to take a no-decision. Senior Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) allowed no earned runs in 3.2 innings to earn her seventh win of the season and Abbene pitched a scoreless inning of relief to earn the save.
D'Youville was led by Jorja Sandilands who went 1-for-2 with two RBI. Hailee Jenkins allowed three earned runs in 1.1 innings to take the loss.
Mercy had five hits and two errors and D'Youville had five hits and two errors.
