DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Powered by a team-high eight RBI and two home runs on the day from junior Julianna Coluccio (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional), the Mercy University Softball Team earned 9-6 and 12-7 come-from-behind wins over Post University in their Morgan's Message Games on Tuesday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Mavericks (20-14) have won four games in a row and now have 20 wins in a season for the second straight year. Mercy wins all three meetings against the Eagles (9-26) this season.
Game 1: Mercy 9, Post 6
Post took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a bases-loaded walk. Mercy tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first. Junior Allison Murphy (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) singled and stole second before scoring on a Coluccio double.
The Eagles scored four runs in the top of the second to take a 5-1 lead.
Post added an unearned run in the third inning to take a 6-1 lead. The Mavericks got a run back in the bottom of the third to make it 6-2. Murphy doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a Coluccio RBI single.
The score remained 6-2 until the sixth inning when Mercy scored seven runs to take a 9-6 lead. Sophomore Jessica Fox (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) walked to lead off the inning and junior Onnika DeBruhl (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) pinch ran for her. Sophomore Mikaela Mammola (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) then singled before junior Dylan Reyer (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) walked to load the bases. Freshman Emma Jackson (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) then hit a bases-clearing triple down the right field line to make it 6-5. Murphy then singled home Jackson to make it 6-6. Junior Averi Miller (Las Vegas, Nev./Arbor View) then doubled home Murphy to make it 7-6 and Coluccio capped off the scoring with a two-run home run to left field, giving Mercy a 9-6 lead. All seven runs in the inning were scored with no outs.
Senior Mackayla Secoda (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to give Mercy the 9-6 game-one win.
Mercy was led by Coluccio who went 3-for-4 with her fourth home run of the season and a game-high four RBI. Jackson went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Murphy went 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI. Miller went 1-for-3 with an RBI and freshman Madelyn Perrone (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) went 2-for-4. Mammola went 1-for-1 with a run and Reyer went 1-for-2 with a run. Freshman Mya Marelli (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) allowed five runs in 1.1 innings to take a no-decision. Senior Marina Provencio (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus) allowed no earned runs in 4.2 innings with three strikeouts to earn her second win of the season. Secoda picked up her first save of the season.
Post was led by Angelica Tompkins who went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Katelyn Lipsky allowed eight runs in 5.0 innings to take the loss.
Mercy had 13 hits and three errors and Post had seven hits and two errors.
Game 2: Mercy 12, Post 7
Post scored three runs in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead. Mercy scored a run in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1. Jackson singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a Coluccio RBI single.
The Eagles added a run in the third inning to take a 4-1 lead. The Mavericks scored three runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 4-4. Reyer singled and stole second and third before Murphy singled Reyer home to make it 4-2. Coluccio later hit her second home run of the day to right center, tying the game at 4-4.
Post scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-4 lead. Mercy regained the lead for good with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take an 8-7 lead. Jackson and Murphy walked to lead off the inning before Miller doubled both home to make it 7-6. Coluccio later brought home Miller after reaching on a error by the pitcher, tying the game at 7-7. Coluccio later scored the go-ahead run on a steal of home to put Mercy up, 8-7.
Mercy scored four more runs in the sixth inning to take a 12-7 lead. Reyer, Jackson and Murphy singled to load the bases before Miller hit a bases-clearing double to left field, making it 11-7. Sophomore Kayla Zimmerman (Brookfield, Conn./American International College) later singled home Miller to make it 12-7.
Sophomore Lauren McSweeney (Islip, N.Y./Islip) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to give Mercy the 12-7 game-two win and the sweep.
Mercy was led by Miller who went 2-for-4 with a game-high five RBI and by Coluccio who went 2-for-4 with her fifth home run of the season and four RBI. Jackson went 2-for-3 with three runs and Murphy went 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI. Murphy recorded her 100th career run scored, becoming the second Maverick in program history to reach the mark. Zimmerman went 1-for-1 with an RBI and freshman Makayla Rady (Wharton, N.J./Morris Knolls) went 1-for-2. Mammola went 1-for-4 and Reyer went 2-for-4 with two runs. Freshman Juliana Abbene (Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale) allowed three runs in 1.0 inning to take a no-decision. McSweeney pitched 2.1 shutout innings of relief to earn her seventh win of the season.
Post was led by Tompkins who went 4-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Lipsky allowed four earned runs in 2.0 innings to take the loss.
Mercy had 13 hits and two errors and Post had nine hits and one error.
Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, April 24th when they host Queens at 2:30 p.m.
