DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Powered by 11 different Mavericks recording a point and sophomore Michael Mitrano (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) going 18-of-20 on faceoffs, the RV Mercy University Men's Lacrosse Team earned a 15-8 Senior Day win over ECC foe D'Youville University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game, seniors Peter Murphy (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Port Jefferson), Sean Higgins (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus), Devon Duchnowski (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), Michael Corbo (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage), Daniel Fitzgerald (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham), Aidan Babnik (Carmel, N.Y./LIU), Christopher Bergersen (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale), Joe Sorok (Merrick, N.Y./Stanford H Calhoun), Ryken Kutner (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead), Jack Agres (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale), Connor Abrahall (Holtsville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist Diocesan) and Matthew Magyar (Floral Park, N.Y./Wingate University) were honored for their contributions to the program.
The Mavericks (9-5, 4-2 ECC) have won three games in a row and improve to 5-0 all-time against the Saints (8-6, 2-4 ECC). Mercy has secured their 11th straight ECC Championship berth.
Mercy opened the game with a strong start on Saturday, as freshman Dean Kott (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) scored the first goal just 29 seconds into the first quarter. Mitrano consistently dominated the faceoff circle, securing possession for Mercy and contributing to its offensive opportunities. Agres added to the lead with a goal at 11:39, assisted by Bergersen.
Magyar further extended the advantage with a goal at the 7:43 mark, bringing the score to 3-0. Despite a goal from D'Youville's Brady Ruffalo at 5:31, the Mavericks maintained their momentum. Sophomore Trey Weinstein (Kitchener, Ontario/Newberry College) closed the quarter with a late goal at 00:14, assisted by freshman Jackson Wilkinson (Scarborough, Ontario/Everest Academy), solidifying a 4-1 lead as the first quarter ended.
Mercy opened the second quarter with a quick goal by Agres, assisted by Duchnowski. Following a response from the Saints' Carsyn Kent, Mercy regained momentum with sophomore Kyle Freyer (Syracuse, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) scoring to maintain the lead.
As the quarter progressed, Mercy capitalized on turnovers and clears, with Magyar and sophomore Cole Hunsberger (Waterloo, Ontario/Grand River Collegiate Institute) each finding the back of the net, both assisted by Agres. D'Youville managed to score through Jack Devlin, but the Mavericks' offense remained strong. The quarter closed with Mercy extending its lead through goals from Magyar and Duchnowski, securing an 11-4 advantage at the end of the quarter.
Mercy began the third quarter with a strong start, as Agres scored at 13:35 with an assist from Bergersen, extending the lead to 12-4. Mercy continued to dominate faceoffs, with Mitrano securing possession multiple times, maintaining offensive pressure on D'Youville.
The Saints managed to score at 12:06, but the Mavericks quickly regained control. Kott found the back of the net at 0:59, assisted by Hunsberger, further solidifying Mercy's lead. The quarter concluded with Mercy leading 13-5.
Mercy maintained control in the fourth quarter, initially recovering a faceoff violation. Despite an early turnover, the Mavericks quickly regained momentum. Abrahall scored at 9:55, making it 14-6. Sophomore Liam Neimeth (Farmingville, N.Y./Belmont Abbey College) extended the advantage with a goal assisted by Hunsberger at 5:14, giving Mercy a 15-7 lead.
The Saints managed to find the net a few times, including a man-up goal by Luciano Gonzalez with just 12 seconds left. However, the Mavericks' defensive efforts, highlighted by multiple saves from Murphy, kept the visitors at bay. Mercy concluded the quarter with a 15-8 lead, securing the victory.
Mercy was led by Agres who had a game-high and career-high seven points on four goals and three assists. Hunsberger had a goal and three assists and Bergersen had three assists. Magyar had three goals and Duchnowski had a goal and an assist. Kott added two goals and Neimeth, Weinstein, Freyer and Abrahall each added a goal. Wilkinson added an assist and Mitrano went 18-of-20 on faceoffs with a game-high nine ground balls. Junior Jake Norton (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) added seven ground balls and Agres and Bergersen each had a team-high two caused turnovers. Junior Cameron Dorfman (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) made five saves in the first half to earn the win. Murphy made six saves in the second half.
D'Youville was led by Kent who had a team-high four points on three goals and an assist. Casey Berns made a game-high 18 saves in 55:54 minutes of action to take the loss.
Mercy held a 46-32 edge in shots, a 49-21 edge in ground balls and Mercy went 25-of-27 on faceoffs.
Head Coach Ryan MacSpadyen and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, April 29th when they play in an ECC Championship Semifinal.
