DiNapoli Tosses Complete Game Shutout as Baseball Earns 7-0 Win Over Staten Island

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Powered by a complete-game shutout from sophomore Ryan DiNapoli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown), the Mercy University Baseball Team earned a 7-0 win over ECC foe College of Staten Island on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (23-21, 14-12 ECC) win six of the eight meetings against the Dolphins (13-26, 8-18 ECC) this season. Mercy has secured their second straight ECC Championship berth and fifth in six seasons.

Mercy took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Junior Dylan Koch (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Pace University) singled and advanced to second on a groundout before scoring on a senior John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) RBI single to make it 1-0. Nisco later scored after a throwing error by the pitcher to make it 2-0.

The Mavericks added four runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-0 lead. Senior David Bernard Jr. (Schenectady, N.Y./Herkimer CC) singled and junior Kyle Engmann (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) walked before senior Kolongi Goins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./FDR) singled to load the bases. Koch then singled home Bernard Jr. to make it 3-0 and sophomore Geneo Savoca (Albany, N.Y./University at Albany) grounded out to the pitcher, allowing Engmann to score. After a Nisco walk, senior Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) singled home Goins and Koch to give Mercy a 6-0 lead.

Mercy tacked on a run in the seventh inning to build a 7-0 lead. Graduate student Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) singled and Engmann doubled to put runners on second and third. Goins then singled home Hoti.

That would be more than enough run support for DiNapoli who tossed a complete game shutout with just seven hits allowed, needing just 97 pitches to finish the game.

Mercy was led by DiNapoli who recorded his fourth win of the season and tossed the first nine-inning complete game shutout by a Mercy pitcher since Matt Nalbone in 2017. Ashline went 2-for-5 with two RBI and Koch went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Savoca went 1-for-5 with an RBI and Nisco went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Junior Nevin Scaperotti (Stormville, N.Y./Carmel) went 2-for-5 and Goins went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Bernard Jr., Hoti and Engmann all went 1-for-3 with a run.

Staten Island was led by Jack Kehoe who went 2-for-3. Nick Pusinelli allowed five runs in 5.1 innings to take the loss.

Mercy had 13 hits and no errors and Staten Island had seven hits and one error.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, April 30th when they host Queens at 3 p.m.
