DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Powered by a three-run home run from senior John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow), the Mercy University Baseball Team earned a 14-13 win over Dominican University on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (19-13) have won seven games in a row for the first time since 1990 and defeat the Chargers (13-19) for the second straight time.
Dominican took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Fraelyn Rosario sacrifice fly. Mercy scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 lead. Juniors Dylan Koch (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Pace University) and Nevin Scaperotti (Stormville, N.Y./Carmel) singled before Nisco hit a three-run home run to left field, giving Mercy a 3-1 lead.
The Chargers scored three runs in the second inning to take a 4-3 lead. The Mavericks retook the lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs to take a 7-4 lead. Graduate student Alfred Hoti (New York, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) walked and junior Kyle Engmann (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) doubled before senior Kolongi Goins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./FDR) singled home Hoti to make it 4-4. Scaperotti later singled home Engmann and Goins to give Mercy a 6-4 lead and senior Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central) later hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Scaperotti to make it 7-4.
Dominican scored three runs in the fourth inning to tie the game at 7-7. Mercy took the lead back with a run in the bottom of the inning. Koch doubled and stole third before scoring on a Scaperotti RBI single to give Mercy an 8-7 lead.
The Chargers tied the game at 8-8 with a run in the fifth inning. The Mavericks made it 9-8 with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Hoti walked and Engmann singled before Goins singled home Hoti to make it 9-8.
The Mavericks added five more runs in the sixth inning to take a 14-8 lead. Ashline singled and senior David Bernard Jr. (Schenectady, N.Y./Herkimer CC) walked before senior Sean McAdams (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) doubled home both runners to make it 11-8. Hoti then doubled home McAdams to make it 12-8 and Engmann later doubled home Hoti to give Mercy a 13-8 lead. Goins singled home Engmann to make it 14-8.
Dominican scored two runs in the eighth and three runs in the ninth to make it 14-13. However, senior Samuel Gil (Bronx, N.Y./St. Bonaventure University) induced a fly out to left field with the tying run at second to give Mercy the 14-13 win.
Mercy was led by Nisco who went 1-for-4 with his third home run of the season and three RBI. Scaperotti and Goins both went 3-for-5 with three RBI and Engmann went 4-for-5 with an RBI. McAdams went 2-for-5 with two RBI and Ashline went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Hoti went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Koch went 2-for-5. Senior Diego Wirz (Stamford, Conn./Stamford) pitched 2.0 innings with two earned runs allowed to take a no-decision. Senior Jack Sullivan (Orlando, Fla./Allegany College of Maryland) pitched a scoreless inning of relief and sophomore Nicholas Stella (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) pitched 1.1 innings with one run allowed to earn his first collegiate win. Sophomore Geneo Savoca (Albany, N.Y./University at Albany) pitched 2.0 scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts.
Dominican was led by Kevin Hirsch who went 4-for-6 with three RBI. Jeuriz Polanco allowed five runs in 1.2 innings to take the loss.
Mercy had 18 hits and one error, and Dominican had 14 hits and one error.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, April 10th when they play at Molloy at 3 p.m.
