UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Despite an RBI from junior Nevin Scaperotti (Stormville, N.Y./Carmel) and a team-high two hits from seniors John Nisco (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) and Zach Ashline (Colonie, N.Y./Colonie Central), the No. 2 seeded Mercy University Baseball Team dropped a 13-1 decision to No. 1 seeded Molloy University in Game Six of the ECC Baseball Championship on Saturday morning at the Mitchel Athletic Complex.
The Mavericks (28-24) end their season as ECC Runner-Up for the first time in program history. The Lions (39-9) win their third straight ECC Championship and earn the ECC's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
Molloy scored two runs in the top of the first on a Steve Mulqueen two-run single to take a 2-0 lead.
The Lions added four runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 10-0 lead. Mercy scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 10-1. Nisco and Ashline both singled with one out before Scaperotti grounded out to third base, scoring Nisco.
Molloy recorded three runs in the seventh inning to take a 13-1 lead and led the rest of the way to earn the win.
Mercy was led by Scaperotti who went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Nisco and Ashline both went 2-for-4. Senior Sean McAdams (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) and junior Kyle Engmann (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) both went 1-for-3. Sophomore Ryan DiNapoli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) allowed five earned runs in 2.0 innings to take the loss. Sophomore Derek Fernandez (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts.
Molloy was led by the championship's Most Outstanding Player Sean Welsh who went 2-for-5 with a game-high five RBI. JC Kiss allowed one run in 7.0 innings to earn the win.
Mercy had seven hits and three errors and Molloy had 16 hits and no errors.
