DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Powered by two goals from both seniors Mario de Roque Zazón (Zaragoza, Spain/Newman University) and Jacob Darwesh Lund-Iversen (Oslo, Norway/Maryville University/Pima CC), the Mercy University Men's Soccer Team earned a 4-2 win over Monroe University on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (1-1) pick up their first win of the season and defeat the Mustangs (1-1) in the schools' first-ever meeting.
All six goals of the game came in the second half. Graduate student Sean Green (Asheville, N.C./Lees-McRae College) made one save in the first half for Mercy and Thomas Lancaster stopped two shots in the frame for Monroe to keep the game scoreless at halftime.
After a scoreless opening five minutes in the second half, Monroe scored the game's first goal in the 51st minute following a Mohammed Mansare goal. Mercy quickly evened the score in the 54th minute when Lund-Iversen assisted a de Roque Zazón goal. Lund-Iversen later gave the Mavericks a 2-1 lead in the 58th minute following a senior John Hollis (Bradford, England/West Virginia Wesleyan College) assist.
The Mustangs tied the game at 2-2 in the 64th minute following a Peterson Aquino goal. Mercy regained the lead for good in the 68th minute when de Roque Zazón scored his second goal of the game, off a junior Herman Borke (Asker, Norway/ Dønski Videregående Skole) assist, to put the Mavericks up, 3-2.
Lund-Iversen later gave Mercy an insurance goal with his second goal of the day, off assists from junior Juan Gonzalez (Paterson, N.J./NJIT) and freshman Marvin Spets (Oslo, Norway/ Blindern Videregaaende Skole), to give the Mavericks a 4-2 lead in the 84th minute. Mercy held on the rest of the way, earning the 4-2 win.
Mercy was led by Lund-Iversen who had a game-high five points on two goals and an assist, recording his goals and assist as a Maverick. De Roque Zazón added two goals and Gonzalez, Hollis, and Borke each dished out their first assists of the year. Spets recorded his first collegiate assist, and Green made a game-high three saves to earn his first win as a Maverick.
Monroe was led by Mansare and Aquino who both scored. Sinan Sargin allowed four goals and made one save in the second half to take the loss.
Mercy held a 14-7 edge in shots, a 7-5 edge in shots on goal and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, September 2nd when they play at Adelphi at 7 p.m.
