GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Powered by three saves from junior Harry Cooke (Saint Albans, England/D'Youville University) and a game-high two shots on goal from senior Jacob Darwesh Lund-Iversen (Oslo, Norway/Maryville University), the Mercy University Men's Soccer Team earned a 0-0 draw at Adelphi University on Wednesday night at Motamed Field.
The Mavericks (1-1-1) earn a draw against the 2025 NCAA Tournament participant Panthers (0-2-1) for the first time since 2023.
Junior Joel Martinez (Madrid, Spain/Mount Aloysius College) recorded the Mavericks' first shot on goal of the game in the 14th minute that was stopped by Adelphi goalie Andrea Farinella. Lund-Iversen and freshman Marvin Spets (Oslo, Norway/Blindern Videregaaende Skole) ended the half forcing Farinella to make two more saves as the teams headed into halftime scoreless.
Cooke came up with a key save in the 69th minute when he dove to his right and stopped an Enrico Cesarini Sforza penalty kick, after a Mercy foul in the box, to keep the game scoreless.
The Mavericks later had a chance to take the lead, but a senior John Hollis (Bradford, England/West Virginia Wesleyan College) penalty kick in the 71st minute sailed high to keep the game at 0-0. Cooke made saves in the 79th and 90th minutes to keep the Panthers scoreless, preserving the 0-0 draw on the road.
Mercy was led by Cooke who made three saves to earn the shutout in his first start as a Maverick. Lund-Iversen had a game-high two shots on goal and senior Mario de Roque Zazón (Zaragoza, Spain/Newman University), Martinez, and Spets each had a shot on goal.
Adelphi was led by Farinella who had a game-high five saves.
Mercy held a 12-9 edge in shots, a 5-3 edge in shots on goal and a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, September 6th when they play at Bridgeport at 1:30 p.m.
