BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Powered by a career-high five saves from junior Harry Cooke (Saint Albans, England/D'Youville University) and goals from senior Jacob Darwesh Lund-Iversen (Oslo, Norway/Maryville University/Pima CC) and junior Philip Hauge (Bergen, Norway/Central Connecticut State University), the Mercy University Men's Soccer Team earned a 2-0 win at regionally-ranked University of Bridgeport on Sunday afternoon at Knights Field.
The Mavericks (2-1-1) are 2-0-1 in their last three games and hand the Purple Knights (1-1-2) their first loss of the season. Mercy has now beaten Bridgeport three straight times.
Mercy wasted little on scoring as Darwesh Lund-Iversen scored in just the 3rd minute of action, following a senior Diego Guzmán (Santiago, Chile/Everest School) assist, to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.
Cooke made saves in the 33rd, 34th and 38th minutes to keep Mercy ahead 1-0. Hauge gave the Mavericks a 2-0 lead in the 42nd minute when he headed in a junior Marcos Landivar (Buenos Aires, Argentina/St. Thomas University) corner kick. Mercy headed into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Cooke stopped two more shots in the second half to preserve the win, giving the Mavericks a 2-0 win and their second straight shutout.
Mercy was led by Lund-Iversen who recorded his team-leading third goal of the season and his first game-winning goal as a Maverick. Hauge recorded his first collegiate goal and Guzmán dished out his first career assist. Landivar added his first assist of the year, and Cooke made a game-high five saves to earn his first collegiate win and his second straight shutout.
Bridgeport was led by Magnus Midtlien who made three saves to take the loss.
Bridgeport held a 9-8 edge in shots and shots on goal were tied at 5-5. Bridgeport held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, September 9th when they host West Chester at 3 p.m.
