DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Powered by a hat trick from senior Jacob Darwesh Lund-Iversen (Oslo, Norway/Maryville University/Pima CC) and a game-high three assists from senior John Hollis (Bradford, England/West Virginia Wesleyan College), the Mercy University Men's Soccer Team earned a 3-2 win over West Chester University on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (3-1-1) have won two games in a row and are 3-0-1 in their last four games. Mercy defeats the Golden Rams (0-1-2) for the first time since 2024.
Mercy scored early again as Lund-Iversen scored in the 4th minute of action to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. Junior Herman Borke (Asker, Norway/Dønski Videregående Skole) sent a through ball to Hollis who crossed the ball from left to right with Lund-Iversen firing the ball into the net.
West Chester tied the game at 1-1 in the 15th minute when Maksym Komperda headed in a Luke Newman cross. The Golden Rams later took a 2-1 lead in the 23rd minute after Lukas Bentsen scored after a misplay by the Mercy goalkeeper.
The Golden Rams headed into halftime with a 2-1 lead.
Lund-Iversen found the back of the net again in the 47th minute when he deflected in a Hollis free kick to tie the game at 2-2.
Mercy took a 3-2 lead in the 55th minute when Hollis played a ball from midfield and found Lund-Iversen, who fired the ball over the goalkeeper's head, giving the Mavericks a 3-2 advantage.
The Mavericks' backline held West Chester scoreless for the remainder of the game and junior Harry Cooke (Saint Albans, England/D'Youville University) made a late save to preserve the win as Mercy earned the 3-2 win.
Mercy was led by Lund-Iversen who recorded his first hat trick and now has a team-high six goals and 13 points on the year. Lund-Iversen is the first Maverick to record a hat trick since Johannes Hanken Tjostheim against Wilmington on October 30, 2024. Hollis recorded a career-high three assists and now has a team-high four assists on the year. The three assists are the most by a Maverick since Julian Holland dished out three assists against West Chester on September 18, 2024. Borke recorded his second assist of the year. Cooke made a game-high five saves to earn the win.
West Chester was led by Komperda and Bentsen who both scored. Alexi Amanatidis made four saves and allowed two goals in the second half to take the loss.
West Chester held a 14-12 edge in shots. Mercy held a 10-7 edge in shots on goal and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, September 13th when they play at Southern Connecticut State at 1 p.m.
