Lund-Iversen Scores Game-High Two Goals as Men's Soccer Earns 2-1 Win at Southern Connecticut State

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Powered by a game-high two goals from senior Jacob Darwesh Lund-Iversen (Oslo, Norway/Maryville University/Pima CC), the Mercy University Men's Soccer Team earned a 2-1 win at Southern Connecticut State University on Sunday afternoon at Jess Dow Field.

The Mavericks (4-1-1) have won three games in a row and win at the Owls (0-2-2) for the first time since 2013.

Southern Connecticut State took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd minute of play after a goal from Andrew Buchanan.

Lund-Iversen later tied the game at 1-1 in the 7th minute following his first goal of the game. Graduate student Sean Green (Asheville, N.C./Lees-McRae College) made two saves in the final minutes of the half to send the teams into halftime tied at 1-1.

Green made a key save in the 53rd minute to keep the game tied at 1-1. Lund-Iversen gave the Mavericks a 2-1 lead in the 62nd minute on a penalty kick for his second goal of the game.

The Mercy backline held the Owls without a shot on goal for the remainder of the game to earn the 2-1 road win.

Mercy was led by Lund-Iversen who had a game-high two goals. The senior now has a team-high eight goals and 17 points on the year. Green made three saves to earn his second win of the season.

Southern Connecticut State was led by Buchanan who scored and by Roger Fontdegloria and Gisli Agustsson who both had an assist. Hector Diez Viota made three saves to take the loss.

Mercy held a 12-7 edge in shots, a 6-4 edge in shots on goal, and a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, September 16th when they host American International at 3:30 p.m.
