NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Despite a goal from junior Charlotte Sabert (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) and a game-high 14 saves from junior Kaylise McClure (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North), the Mercy University Field Hockey Team dropped a 5-1 decision at Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday night at Jess Dow Field.
The Mavericks (0-2) fall to the Owls (1-2) for the fourth straight time.
Keana Criscuolo scored the game's first goal just 50 seconds into the contest, giving the Owls a 1-0 lead. McClure made three saves in the quarter to keep the score 1-0 at the end of the first quarter.
McClure made two saves to begin the second quarter before Kate Salvador scored to give the Owls a 2-0 lead in the 22nd minute. McClure stopped six more shots before Criscuolo scored again to give Southern Connecticut State a 3-0 lead at halftime.
Sabert scored the Mavericks' first goal of the season in the 32nd minute to make it 3-1. Bridget Andros later made it 4-1 with a goal in the 38th minute. McClure made one more save in the quarter to keep it 4-1at the end of the third quarter.
Junior Jaime Stella (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack) forced Owl goalie Lyndsay Troisi to make two saves to open the fourth quarter and Sabert also forced Troisi to make a stop. McClure stopped two more shots before Isabella Sharp-Senior scored a goal with less than a minute left to give the Owls a 5-1 lead they would not relinquish.
Mercy was led by Sabert who scored her first goal of the season and 14th career goal. McClure made a game-high 14 saves to take the loss. Stella, Sabert and junior Madison Brefka (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero North Syracuse) each had a team-high three shots.
Southern Connecticut State was led by Criscuolo who had two goals and an assist. Troisi made six saves to earn the win.
Southern Connecticut State held a 33-15 edge in shots, a 19-7 edge in shots on goal and a 14-8 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, September 13th when they host Saint Michael's at 11 a.m.
