RINDGE, N.H. – Powered by a game-high 17 saves from junior Kaylise McClure (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) and goals from junior Madison Brefka (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero North Syracuse) and senior Kate Lynne Conklin (Greenvale, N.Y./Franklin Pierce University), the Mercy University Field Hockey Team earned a 2-1 win at Franklin Pierce University on Saturday afternoon at Sodexo Field.
The Mavericks (1-4) earn their first win of the season and defeat the Ravens (1-4) for the first time since 2023.
Mercy took a 1-0 lead in just the 3rd minute of action when Conklin scored following a sophomore Gwendolyn Smith (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) assist, after Conklin took a penalty corner. McClure made four saves in the quarter to keep Mercy ahead 1-0 at the end of the first quarter.
McClure made 11 more saves in the second quarter before Reese Swanson scored for the Ravens with less than a minute left before halftime to tie the score at 1-1. The teams headed into halftime tied at 1-1.
McClure stopped a shot to begin the third quarter before Brefka gave the Mavericks a 2-1 lead in the 39th minute after a Conklin shot was stopped by Zoe Noorlag. Mercy headed into the fourth quarter with a 2-1 lead.
McClure made a final save in the 52nd minute to preserve the win and the Mavericks came away with the 2-1 road win.
Mercy was led by McClure who made a game-high 17 saves to earn her first win of the season. Conklin scored her first collegiate goal and added her first assist of the season. Brefka recorded her team-leading second goal of the season and Smith dished out her first assist of the year.
Franklin Pierce was led by Swanson who scored and by Noorlag who made four saves to take the loss.
Franklin Pierce held a 26-8 edge in shots, an 18-6 edge in shots on goal and an 11-5 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Marissa Spinazzola and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, September 27th when they host Bentley at 12 p.m.
